Montreal Canadians @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 35
Congratulations to Denton Mateychuk on being called up by the Cleveland Monsters to play in his first NHL game tonight. Having seen him in past Blue Jackets camps, it's great to finally see him take the ice in the league. Mateychuk and the Jackets would look for a strong start to their final game before taking their holiday break, and boy did that happen! After several great attempts to score on Canadians' goaltender, Sam Montembealut, Dimitri Voronkov would finally break through at 12:93 with his ninth goal of the season. Sean Monahan would add his eighteenth assist of the season with the primary and only assist on this goal. Just before the period could end, Kent Johnson would enter the double-digit club with his tenth goal of the season at 18:45. The primary assist would come from Zach Werenski and become his twenty-second of the season while the secondary assist would become Mathiew Oliver's sixth assist this season. The Jackets would carry a 2-0 lead into period two.
Former Jacket, D. Savard, would get the Canadians on the board at 2:03 and this would be his first goal this season. The primary assist would become C. Caufield's fourteenth assist this season while the secondary assist would belong to N. Suzuki's twenty-fourth of the season. Jordan Harris would then take the Jackets up 3-1 at 3:34 with his first goal of the season and as a Jacket! The primary assist would become the twenty-third this season for Kirill Marchenko while the secondary assist would become the nineteenth of the season for Sean Monahan. At 7:02, L. Hutson would score his second goal this season and begin closing the gap the Jackets made. The primary assist on this goal would become J. Slafkovsky's fifteenth assist this season while the secondary would become C. Caufield's fifteenth of the season as well. The gap would then be closed with J. Evans eighth goal of the season at 14:26. The primary assist on this goal would belong to E. Heineman and it would be his sixth this season while the secondary would belong to D. Savard and that would become his eighth this season. So, with a 3-3 tie, the Canadians and Jackets would roll into the third period with an electric conclusion ahead.
Just 0:20 into the third period, J. Armia would add his sixth goal of the season and give the Canadians their first lead of the night. J. Evans would receive the primary assist, his thirteenth this season, while A. Carrier would receive the secondary assist, his eighth this season. But, at 3:24, Dimitri Voronkov would enter the double-digit goal club with his tenth goal this season and on the powerplay, too! The primary assist on this goal would be credited to Kirill Marchenko and become his twenty-fourth this season while the secondary would be credited to Zach Werenski and this would become his twenty-third this season. And, just like that, we're tied again but at 4-4! Kirill Marchenko would fix that at 17:48 with his thirteenth goal this season! The primary assist would be credited to Sean Monahan becoming his twentieth this season and the secondary would be credited to Zach Werenski becoming his twenty-fourth this season. The Jackets would close out the game with a regulation win, the first for Jet Greaves in net this season, with a 5-4 final! His final save percentage would be .871. He accomplished this with 27 stops on 31 shots by the visiting Canadians.
The Third Star of the Game tonight was Sean Monahan with a 0-3-3 night.
The Second Star of the Game tonight was Dimitri Voronkov with a 2-0-2 night.
The First Star of the Game tonight was Kirill Marchenko with a 1-2-3 night.
It's also a new record for Zach Werenski as he adds to his home point steak. Tonight marks his eleventh home game in a row with a point or more, and I personally expect him to add to that one later this week, expanding his record further.
Our next game will be on Friday night in Nationwide Arena as we welcome the Boston Bruins to home ice at 7:00 p.m.
I wish you all a very happy holiday break. Please, be safe. And happy holidays to our players, coaches, staff, and the Gaudreau family.
GO CBJ!
