Fireworks In Carolina Result in 4-0 Blue Jackets Shutout...Just Breathe 5th Line, It'll Be Okay.

Although Period 1 ended with a 0-0 score, don't be tricked, it was an eventful period.  We saw Domi get into a tiff with Jarvis, a Hurricane's player.  This gave the Hurricane's a Powerplay, after Domi got 2 X 2 minute roughing penalties, while Jarvis received only 1.  In addition we saw Gavrikov live up to that "A" now on his uniform, as he stopped a puck...with his face.  It was cringe worthy no doubt, as blood had to be cleaned from the ice, once he was able to leave it of course.  Thankfully, he'd come back with fresh stitches in the second period.  Also, the penalty kills were amazing for both teams, as you can tell by the 0-0 score, after the first 20 minutes.

Period 2 would be a bit more challenging for the Blue Jackets.  At 9:22 Staal would score for the Hurricanes, making the score 1-0, in his teams favor.  This was followed by another Hurricanes goal at 18:09, just seconds into a Hurricanes Powerplay.  The goal was from Teravainen.  After 2 periods of hockey the score would reflect a 2-0 Hurricanes lead.

Period 3 would give our Blue Jackets an even bigger challenge.  Niederreiter would score at 1:14, and then Trocheck would get another goal at 1:50.  This would make the score 4-0 in favor of the Hurricanes.  This game had been heated since the first few minutes, however after a check from a Hurricane, Kuraly fought back.  The Blue Jackets were given a Powerplay, as that Hurricane was sent to the box, however due to his actions after said cross check, Kuraly was sent to the locker room.  With a 10 minute misconduct penalty his game was over.  This doesn't happen often for the Blue Jackets, so if anyone else was shocked, I'm right there with you!  Just a quick reference I used from Jeff Svoboda, because this disagreement if you will, happened fast.  "#CBJ gets a power play out of the scrum, but Sean Kuraly has been given a 10-minute misconduct, which ends his night at this point."

Tonight, sadly wouldn't just end with a 4-0 shutout loss in Carolina, it would also mark the end of Patrik Laine's point streak.  He now holds the third longest in the franchise's history.  It starched for 11 games.  He had 13 goals and 8 assists, for a total of 21 points.  Even as this end I have zero doubt he'll score again very soon.  Well done to Laine, what an incredible point run.

Regarding the loss, this makes Berube now 3-1-0 this season in the NHL as a Blue Jacket.  He did a great job tonight, stopping some incredible shots that didn't result in points for the Hurricanes.  A loss stings but I'm sure he'll dust himself off, and be ready to play his next game, in no time.  As for the team as a whole, yes we were just out, however it isn't all that bad.  I get a 5th win in a row would've been night, again I totally agree with you.  This was an incredible challenge though.  The team went from Columbus to Florida, playing a team which had only lost 4 games this season, and they handed them their 5th loss.  Defeating the Panthers 6-3 is an incredible accomplishment.  Then flying to Carolina to play another incredible team, the Hurricanes, the next day.  That's a high ask for any NHL team.  Also, keep in mind the last time we played the Hurricanes at home, we kind of shut them out 6-0.  So, to say they didn't want revenge would be a HUGE understatement, okay.  Just saying.

Next game is Sunday as the Penguins come to Columbus and Nationwide Arena.  This is a 6:00 PM EST puck drop 5th Line.  Unless there are any other updates before then, we'll talk then CBJ fans.

Go CBJ!
