The Good News Keeps Coming For Blue Jackets- 2/21/22

The Laine 9-game point streak.  Max Domi's 200th assist.  Jenner's 39 total points this season, so far.  Bjorkstrand's 33 total points this season, so far.  Chinakhov's 3 points in his last 2 games.  Kukan's first multi-goal game.  Berube's first NHL game, and win, in just under 4 years.  Jet Greaves 3-year contract.  5th Line, this is all just as of last night, and there's other high notes I didn't even add to this.  The Blue Jackets are hot, and the good news doesn't end there.  

Via Jeff Svoboda's eyes today, we now know that an injured Blue Jacket has returned to practice.  After suffering a strained groin, which happened during the January 31st Panther's game in Nationwide Arena.  Sadly the team lost both Bean and that game, with a final score of 8-4, Panthers over Blue Jackets.  Ever since the Defenseman's been on the Blue Jackets Injury Reserve List, and his estimated return wasn't until March, at the earliest.  So, don't get too excited 5th Line, I doubt he'll play tomorrow night when the Maple Leafs come to Nationwide Arena.  However, seeing him doing well and back with the team is reason to celebrate enough, I think.  He's a great Defender, and has a total of 15 points this 2021-22 NHL Season, consisting of 4 goals and 11 assists.  Being only 23-years-old I'm sure he's eager to return and add to those numbers, before the season comes to a close, however that may happen.    

Again, due to Jeff Svoboda's eyes we also know that Korpisalo and Merzlikins didn't practice today, again.  It's sad to see them both out with injuries...again.  However, the team of Berube and Greaves practiced together with the team today, and after last night's showing against the Sabres, I have faith in them to lead until our key goaltenders are able to return.  With both Korpisalo and Merzlikins both listed "day-to-day" it's unclear when that may be.  As I've said though, for being on truly our 4th and 5th goaltenders right now, I'm very impressed with what I've seen, and I believe you are too 5th Line.   

Remember, tomorrow night the Maple Leafs are here in Nationwide Arena.  Puck drop is the typical 7:00 PM EST we're used to.  I'd say this means no late hockey, but this team loves to flirt with Overtime!  I'll let you know who's in net, and if any other lineup changes are announced tomorrow.

Brenden Gaunce, Nick Blankenburg, and Jake Bean Sign NHL Deals Away From Columbus Blue Jackets

The 2024 Trade Deadline gives and takes away every season. Today, the Columbus Blue Jackets signed Sean Monahan to a deal that will last five years and give him a 5.5 Million AAV. This was the brighter side of the day as several Columbus Blue Jackets and Cleveland Monsters players signed elsewhere, including a favorite of mine.  The 30-year-old Center, Brenden Gaunce, left us to join the Minnesota Wild. He agreed to a deal that will go through the 2025-26 NHL Season. He was in Columbus last season for 24 games and had 4 points with an even 2 goals and 2 assists. I have yet to see what his contract is valued at, but nevertheless, I wish him good luck with the Wild.  Jake Bean had the 5th Line divided. Some saw value in him staying, while others wanted him traded months ago. He wasn't traded today but signed to become a Calgary Flame. This contract will take him through the 2025-26 NHL Season like Brenden Gaunce. It'll pay him roughly 1.75 million each season. Appearing in 72 gam

Rest in Peace, Johnny and Mathew Gaudreau- Part One

I've learned something over the roughly two and a half weeks since we lost Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Mathew; I will never be ready to write this blog. I've been avoiding this because my words seem hollow and empty to me; like anything I could say would be redundant and not enough. August 29th, 2024 will forever be burned into my brain alongside July 4th, 2021, the date we lost goaltender, Matiss Kivlenieks, in a firework accident when he used himself to shield others. To say this franchise and its fans have suffered too many tragedies since I started covering the team in May 2020 is an understatement. When we lost 'Kivi' I never imagined doing this again, but I am, and I won't lie to you because I never have; I hate that I have to do this again. My heart is shattered, especially for the Gaudreau family, and I don't think I'll ever find all the pieces. The hockey community will forever be changed by this tragedy.
