Columbus Blue Jackets @ Colorado Avalanche In Finland: 2022-23 NHL Game 11 Recap

Today, the spark returned to the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Period 1 would end with a 2-0 Colorado Avalanche lead.  These goals would come from L.O'Connor at 1:36 and J. Compher at 12:27.  Toward the end of this period though, the Columbus Blue Jackets would gain a Power Play.  They would not score, but it would light a spark within the team to have come so close to scoring at least twice, but not managing to mark the scoreboard.  This spark continued into Period 2, and boy was it amazing to see!

However, first M. Rantanen would score again for the Avalanche.  This would take the score to a 3-0 Avalanche lead, just 0:35 into the second period.  Then, it all changes for the better in the Blue Jackets favor, majorly.  Jakub Voracek would score goal 1 in Tampere, Finland!  This would be the FIRST Power Play goal of the 2022-23 NHL Season.  Assists would go to homeboy Patrik Laine and Zach Werenski.  Patrik Laine would then follow this up at 7:16 with his second goal of the season, first in Finland for this Global Series trip and also his first back since his elbow sprain!  (Hearing Finland fans go wild was a moment I'm sure he will remember forever).  Assists on his goal would go to Johnny Gaudreau and Jake Bean.  This Period would end with a strong showing by the Blue Jackets, as they'd be down just 1 goal, Avalanche leading 3-2.

Period 3 would then start off with another Blue Jackets bang!  Liam Foudy would score his first regular-season goal!  Assists on this goal would go to Eric Robinson and a second this game to Jake Bean.  The 3-3 tie would be sweet, but sadly wouldn't last.  M. Rantanen would score at 8:54, then C. Maker would score at 10:69, and after that M. Rantanen would add another at 18:56 (Empy Net which would result in a hattrick for him.)  This would make the final for Game 1 in Finland a 6-3 Avalanche Win.

With that being said, today wasn't just a thrill for the Blue Jackets being part of the 2022 Global Series in Finland, it was a thrill because this team looked like one for the first time a few games.  The Defense protected the Goalie.  Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins was able to make big saves, because he wasn't exhausted by Period 2.  The Offense was focused and hungry to score.  This wasn't a win on the score sheet, but it was a win for this team finding their way through these last few rough games.  The best part however has to be that Game 2 is tomorrow, giving the Blue Jackets a chance to split the 2022 Global Series in Finland.  I'm so happy for Patrik Laine, who ended the game with a 1-1-2 today, in his hometown, doesn't get much better than that.

Tomorrow's Game 2 of the 2022 Global Series will have a 2:00 PM puck drop here in America, while it will be 8:00 PM in Tampere, Finland.  To all my readers, I do work tomorrow during the game, so my recap will be late.  With that being said, you better believe I'm not missing the chance to wrap up this Global Series tomorrow evening.

Until then 5th Line,

Go CBJ!

  1. 4 game losing streak. 1 for 28 on the powerplay. They lost this game 6 to 3! If Brad Larsen is not fired when they return from this trip then I officially give up. It's absolutely delusional to be positive after a fourth straight loss, by multiple goals.

  2. You had TWO double minors on which the team scored ZERO goals. That is absolutely pathetic. Elvis is the worst in the league on nearly every single statistic. Get a grip!
