Columbus Blue Jackets @ New York Islanders: 2022-23 NHL Season Game 14 Recap

First and foremost, welcome to the NHL Marcus Bjork!  Also, congratulations to Eric Robinson, this game tonight marks his 200th in the NHL.  There were plenty of other high points in this game too, beyond these going into the game, so let's recap 5th Line!

Period 1 would see both teams finding their rhythm.  By this, I mean the score was the same when the period began, as it was when it concluded.  0-0 after Period 1, but by no means was this a boring period.  With all the losses the Blue Jackets have faced within the last 48 hours on Defense (Nick Blankenburg, Zach Werenski and Erik Gudbranson) this period was exciting for the fact the new group of defenders played well together.

Period 2 would see the end of that 0-0 tie, with the Blue Jackets breaking the scoring ice first.  Cole Sillinger would finally get his first goal of the season, and a Power Play goal at that!  This goal of his would come 3:09 into this second period of play.  Yegor Chinakhov would gain his fifth assist of the season, while Jake Bean would gain his fourth.  At 7:27 however, B. Nelson would settle the score at 1 each.  This tie would only last a few minutes, as we'd all remembstrom-Bemstrom is back!  Yes, Emil Bemstrom would have his first goal of the season at 10:15.  Gus Nyquist would gain assist one on this goal, marking his third this season and 100th total point as an NHL player!  Asssist two would go to Jake Beean, his second of the night and 6th of the season.  2-1 Blue Jackets, but the Islanders wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring one more time in this period.   That fourth goal in just these 20 minutes alone would again come from B. Nelson, at 19:15, just as the second period came to an end.  2-2 after 40 minutes and a very eventful second.

Period 3 would again see more great back and forth game play.  Then, at 9:38, a moment would happen which Marcus Bjork would remember forever; his first NHL goal in his first NHL game.  Bemstrom would gain his first assist this season, on this goal., while Nyquist would gain his second assist and fourth of this season.  The Blue Jackets would enjoy that 3-2 lead...but again not for long.  S. Mayfield would score for the home team Islanders at 12:51., taking it back to a tie, this time at 3-3.  This tie would then hold through the remainder of the period, taking us to Overtime!

Sadly, this Overtime wouldn't last long.  0:39 Z. Parise would get one past Joonas Korpisalo, winning the game for his Islanders at home.  The final score would be 4-3, Islanders win.

Okay, we lost.  However, Bean, Nyquist and Bemstrom would all have multi-point nights.  Also, Sillinger and Bemstrom would have their first goals of the season, and Bemstrom would tack on his first assist of this season too.  Marcus Bjork had the big night though, with not just playing his first NHL game, but scoring his first goal in it too.  No, we didn't win, but all these personal victories are huge.  Plus, with this game going to Overtime, we did still get a point.   Last, Joonas Korpisalo, he had 42 saves on 46 shots, which was beyond incredible for him.

Game 15 of this 2022-23 NHL Season will happen November 15th as John Tortorella and the Flyers come back to Columbus again.  The puck drop for that game is set for 7:00 PM.  Having beat them the other night in Columbus 5-2, the Blue Jackets will have to bee on their A-Game, as one thing will be on their minds for sure: revenge.  After all, it's a dish best served cold, and you don't get much colder than an ice rink!

If there are any other updates between now and then, I'll post them or if the news is game changing (like Werenski's season ending injury) I'll write a special blog for it.

Until then 5th Line,

Go CBJ!
