Columbus Blue Jackets @ New York Islanders: 2022-23 NHL Season Game 34 Recap

I hope you all had a great holiday, but now it's time to get back to what we love, some CBJ Hockey! The extended holiday break is now over for the Columbus Blue Jackets.  (Much respect and support to the Buffalo area and the Sabers, who we were meant to play Tuesday but was postponed due to the devastating winter weather.

Period 1 of tonight's game would end with a knotted 0-0 tie.  Each team had one chance on the Powerplay, but both would result in no goals being scored.  The Blue Jackets and the Islanders also had other great possibilities, but with both goaltenders locked in, the first goal would require some significant work.

Said first goal of this game would come, but sadly, it would not be ours.  J. Pageau would get one past Joonas Korpisalo at 7:12.  Before this period would end, M. Barzal would also score a Powerplay goal at 16:39.  This would put the Blue Jackets at a 2-0 deficit after 40 minutes of gameplay.

This was true throughout the game, but as Bob McElligott said during the radio broadcast, Joonas Korpisalo easily was the most impactful player tonight.  He gave the Blue Jackets a chance and worked his butt off, keeping it a 2-0 game so that if his team could just score a couple goals, they'd have a chance to still win this game.  In the last few seconds of the game, the Blue Jackets would prevent the shutout!  Emil Bemstrom would score at 19:39, marking the third goal of his season.  Marcus Bjork would gain his seventh assist this season, while Johnny Gaudreau would get to quarter status, gaining his twenty-fifth this season.  Unfortunately, another goal would elude the Blue Jackets, and they'd fall 2-1 in New York tonight.

With the Islanders scoring 2 goals on 36 shot attempts, Joonas Korpisalo is my honorary Blue Jackets Star tonight.  No question he played very well tonight. If the Blue Jackets could gain more time in their opponent's zone, this team could win more games.  It's easier advice to give than applied, especially when so many young prospects are in for just as many groomed players.  With that in mind, this team is playing well for how many lines consist of first-year NHL players, I think.

Game 35 of this NHL Season will be the last of 2022.  I will be working during such as the game is now 1:00 PM.  (Covering for someone who is ill.)  If I get the chance to write up something that night I will do so, but if I don't I wish you all a fun and safe New Years' Eve!

Go CBJ!
