Columbus Blue Jackets @ Detroit Red Wings: 1/14/23 Game Recap

Period 1 would start out with several bangs! The Blue Jackets would take an early edge, working the puck and gaining many shots on the Detroit Goal, and the first one would connect at 12:47 for Patrik Laine. This would be his tenth goal of his 2022-23 NHL Season. Johnny Gaudreau would add number twenty-eight to his assist total, while Jack Roslovic would add number eighteen. This would be quickly followed by another Blue Jackets goal, this time by Vladislav Gavrikhov. At 13:54. This goal marks number three for him this season. The two assists on this goal went to Kent Johnson, number eleven this season for him, and Emil Bemstrom, number five. Then, that 2-0 lead would grow again,, by way of Patrik Laine, adding number eleven to his goal total this season at 15:30. Jack Roslovic would tack on his second assist tonight and number nineteen this season. The second assist would come from newly returned Nick Blankenburg, his second of this season. So, after just 20 minutes, the Blue Jackets would have a 3-0 lead in Detroit.

Period 2 would see just one goal, and it would come from Patrik Laine. Sing it with me 5th Line-

"Hatty-Patty Hatty-Patty NHL Man, Score Three Goals As Fast As You Can!"

Hey, this season, you celebrate when it happens! This Hattrick for Laine is number 10 for him since becoming an NHL Player, while it's the second of this season for a Blue Jacket player and the same number for him in our team's jersey. This goal would come at just 1:32 into this period and takes him to number twelve this season. The assists on this goal go to Adam Boqvist, number five for him this season, and Johnny Gaudreau, number two for him tonight and number twenty-nine this season. With this smooth period in the books, the Blue Jackets would extend their lead to 4-0.

Period 3 would start out with excellent puck handling by the Blue Jackets, but while defending the goal a puck would come off the pads of Elvis Merzlikins, and while attempting to remove it from the goal area, it would go in for a Red Wings score but the unfortunate stick of Blue Jackets Mathew Oliver. This goal would go to O. Maatta at 5:50 and make the score 4-1. A short time later, J. Walman would score at 7:08, taking the score to a 4-2 Blue Jackets lead. At 15:56, L. Raymond would also score for the Red Wings, bringing them within one of the Blue Jackets: 4-3. This game would come down to just 0:02:50, and thanks to this team, I've had no nails all winter!  However, the Blue Jackets would skate away with the two points tonight! The eleventh road game is the charm, and the losing streak for our away games is over, and against a fantastic team no less.  Your final was 4-3, Blue Jackets WIN!

Tonight, Elvis Merzlikins would defend the net, successfully keeping 25 of the Red Wings' 28 total shots on his net.  It's nice to see the roster rebounding from so many injuries and win in front of Merzlikins.

Our Penalty Koll was 2 for 2.

We had just 1 chance on the Powerplay and didn't score, but with the win, this doesn't matter much to me.

We won on hits, 27 for us and 23 for them.

Our Blocks were massive, 18 for us and just 7 for the Red Wings.

Star One Tonight, no surprise, Patrick Hattrick Laine.  3-0-3.

Star Two Tonight, Johnny Gaudreau, 0-2-2.

Third Star Tonight was L. Raymond, his third goal turning this into a game.

Our next season game will be a can't-miss showdown in Nationwide Arena Monday night.  The New York Rangers, with Artemi Panarin, will come to visit.  The puck drop is set for 7:00 PM, and we'll see if our Blue Jackets can keep this winning rolling!

GO CBJ!
