Columbus Blue Jackets TRADE Gus Nyquist: 2.28.23

I didn't see this coming. Gus Nyquist was a trade rumor for so long, but after his injury, many fans and myself expected us to sign him to a 1-year deal like we did Joonas Korpisalo last season after he had surgery on both his hips. Tonight, less than an hour before the puck drop in Buffalo, New York, we now know that won't be the case.

"NEWS: The Blue Jackets have acquired a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Gustav Nyquist. The pick originally belonged to the Boston Bruins. #CBJ"

This move was a surprise because we've seen Vladislav Gavrikhov, and as of today, Joonas Korpisalo held out of games pending a likely trade. With Nyquist out on IR due to a shoulder injury a few weeks ago, this trade came without waning. That said, I'm not surprised the Minnesota Wild made an offer for him. They are currently 4th in their Central Division with a record of 32-21-6. They are sometimes a solid playoff team, like when they beat us 2-0 last Thursday. However, on Saturday, we played them again, and it took a 3-2 win in overtime for them to beat us again. If they want a chance at the playoffs, adding a good goal scorer will help, and that's what Nyquist can do.

It is hard to see a second "A" leave the team, as Oliver Bjorkstradn was traded away to the Seattle Kraken over the summer offseason. Gus Nyquist was the 121st pick in 2008, starting his NHL Career as a Detroit Red Wing. He was a Blue Jacket from the 2019-2020 season to this current date. Nyquist played an even 200 games with the franchise, scoring 43 total goals and assisting on an additional 74. His impact was significant for his short time here and will be missed. The only good news is that we will still see him play in this league. I wish him nothing but the best of luck.

Ps. Sad I'll not hear Bob McEilligott yell, "get on the bus Gus" ever again.
