Detroit Red Wings @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 10/16/23 Recap

After goals from Shayne Goshisbehe scored at 8:51, and the Blue Jackets couldn't match the goal, we all felt a bit optimistic that the CBJ could bounce back. Then, period 2 led to three more goals from the Red Wings. First came Michael Rasmussen at 7:45, then Dylan Larkin at 11:11, and then Andrew Copp at 12:07. Two of the three second-period goals would come on Blue Jackets' penalties. Aside from more trading of penalties in period 3, we'd see a hearted fight between Assistant Captain Erik Gudbranson and Red Wings'Klim Kostin. (Gudbranson didn't appreciate the hit he put on Cole Sillinger!) Sadly, both players getting five-minute fighting majors still wouldn't urge either team to score again. That said, a penalty shot would be given to the Red Wings for a 'hooking call,' and love it or hate it, Spencer Martin stopped it. Even with that save, one-on-one, the Blue Jackets still couldn't find a spark, and we'd finally seen an end to this painful game. Tonight would make the Blue Jackets' first time being shut out this season, 4-0.

The good thing is we've already seen this Blue Jackets team's ability to bounce back after a tough loss. After a brought 4-2 loss to open the season, they'd come out swinging to beat a respectable New York Rangers team 5-3. This is one game, and even though it's a tough puck to swallow, it is only game 3 out of 82. Their chance to bounce back this time will be Friday, October 20th. We will face the Calgary Flames at Nationwide Arena at 7:00 p.m. It is Star Wars Night, and I will be there. I also have work early the following day, so there will not be a game recap on Friday; sorry! That said, I will be back for the next game @ Minnesota Wild on October 21st at 8:00 p.m. Hopefully, by then, Elvis Merzzlikins will be well enough to play, or Spencer Martin can work a bit more with our defense in practice to square away a plan before his second game in a Blue Jackets jersey.

Go CBJ!
