Montreal Canadians @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 11/29/23 Game Recap

There is no better way to start a game on the 29th of any month than with a goal from 29, and that's exactly how the first goal of tonight's game happened. With his fourth goal this season, Patrik Laine would score 3:40 into the second period. His goal would stand as his alone, and the Blue Jackets would be up 1-0 after an opening period of many attempts but zero goals for both teams. During this period, we'd have plenty of goals, and not all would be ours. Case in point, Alex Newhook would answer Patrik Laine's goal at 7:36, bringing us to a 1-1 tie. Then, Yegor Chinakov would get in on the scoring with his third goal this season, and his second in the last two games, at 9:47. David Voronkov adds a seventh assist to his season total, while Zach Werenski makes history for the second time this month. Seth Jones once had ten assists in a single month, until tonight. That was the franchise record. That career highlight belongs to Zach Werenski, who scored his eleventh in November of 2023. After his season-ending injury last year, it's a great accomplishment to see; he really deserves this success, and his now fifteen total assists this season so far. Yet again, the Canadians would put up another goal, making it 2-2 at 14:08, thanks to Cole Caufield. So, after a first period of nothing to show, both teams would manage two goals in period two. In the third, both would seek to

It would take almost the whole third period for the tie to be broken, and in the end, the Canadians would be the ones to do so. At 17:02, Mike Matheson would shoot a laser past Elvis Merzlikins and give his struggling team a big 3-2 lead. With less than three minutes left to find a tying goal, Merzlikins would leave the net, and the Canadians would put this game away with an empty net at 19:03, thanks to Gustav Lindstrom. The game tonight would end with a 4-2 Canadians win. Two steps forward and one back. We've seen this team play better, and this team will benefit from not getting a lucky win tonight. They have some notes to take from this game, but I'm sure Head Coach Vincent and the players themselves will do just that in the coming days before our next December 1st.

Let's hope for a better game this weekend. It's a new month as Joonas Korpisalo and the Ottawa Senators travel to Columbus. That game will start at 7:00 p.m.
