Columbus Blue Jackets @ New York Islanders: 12/7/23 Game Recap

At exactly 4:00 into the opening period, Pierre Engwall would put his home team on the board with an early 1-0 lead over the Blue Jackets. He would have the only goal in the first twenty minutes. So, even though the Blue Jackets wouldn't score this period, they would defend the net against any further scoring.

Period 2 would see the Blue Jackets heat up. First, at 5:56, we see Emil Bemstrom make his return well-known with his fourth goal in the NHL this season. With this goal, Adam Fantilli has eight assists this season, and Kent Johnson has his third. This goal was an entire Michigan affair: a talented group of men. After this, at 10:11, #11 (Adam Fantilli) would gain his sixth goal of his rookie season. Kent Johnson would make his 100th game a multipoint night with his second assist this evening, his fourth overall this season, on this Fantilli goal. In addition, we got to see Zach Werenski take his own assist, totaling up to a staggering nineteen. Unfortunately for our Jackets, the booing Islanders fans after the Blue Jackets 2-1 lead would rally the home team. Mathew Barzal would take back the lead at 18:51, and then that lead would grow by another goal at 19:19, thanks to Kyle Palmieri. So, the Blue Jackets would have some scoring to do in period 3.

Good thing we have Adam Fantilli! At 1:37, Mr. 11 would pop his second goal of the night into the Islanders' net. This marks his seventh goal overall in his rookie season. Emil Bemstrom would have a multipoint night with an assist, his second this season, on this goal. Also, the secondary assist would be Jake Bean's third this season. And then, it was a one-goal game...until a bad rebound at 5:33 would result in a goal from Islanders' Mathew Barzal. The Blue Jackets would do their best to fight back, but with a goal from Bo Horvat at 11:29 and then another at 11:51, the 5-3 would quickly turn into a 7-3 black hole. Still, the Blue Jackets continued to fight back, and I have to give them credit for not giving up for the last roughly seven minutes. The Islanders were looking for redemption after their previous loss, and tonight, they got it as they finished 7-3 over the Blue Jackets.

An upside? We had several players with a multipoint night. Also, it was the first time we saw #11 score two goals in a single game.

Our next game, and the chance for redemption, is tomorrow night. It is also a special game as we highlight First Responders Night in Nationwide Arena. If you are a First Responder, thank you for all you do in our community! The game will start at 7:00 p.m. we will welcome the St. Louis Blues to our ice.

Go CBJ!
