Columbus Blue Jackets @ Edmonton Oilers: 1/23/24 Game Recap

Tonight's stop in Edmonton, Canada, is the first on the Columbus Blue Jackets five-game road trip. They'll have two more games in Canada before stopping in Seattle and St. Louis. Tonight, I predicted the Oilers edging out the Blue Jackets narrowly, 5-4, on X. Why? The Edmonton Oilers are on a hot streak with wins in their last thirteen games. That kind of streek, exceeding twelve games, has yet to happen for an NHL Canadian team since the 1960s. So you can understand my realistic prediction of the score. Now, with all of that said, let's recap a hockey game.

As I expected, the Oilers would jump to an early 1-0 lead with goal ten from Warren Foegele at 7:30. This would also be the first powerplay of the evening. At 15:25, though, Dmitri Voronkov would put his visiting Blue Jackets on the board. Welcome to the double-digit goals for yet another rookie Blue Jacket, which marks Voronkov's tenth this season! The only assist would belong to Kent Johnson, who now has nine this season. These two goals would offset, and with no others this period, the game would be just as close after twenty as before.

The game wouldn't get any closer in the second twenty minutes, either. Edmonton scored a goal, but within a minute, the Blue Jackets had already challenged it for offsides. This challenge would be found credible, and this period would end with the same 1-1 score that the first had.

Evander Kane would come out swinging with goal fifteen of his season, giving his home team a 2-1 lead at 4:53. About a minute later, a battle for the puck and the next goal would happen before Elvis Merzlikins, and after being backed into the net, the Oilers would score their third goal of the evening. This goal would come at 5:48, giving Conner McDavid his seventeenth this season. Elvis Merzlikins wouldn't be thrilled with the situation, but in review, the Oilers hadn't backed him into the net but a fellow Blue Jacket, and the 3-1 lead stands. A final goal from Dylan Holloway at 15:36 would seal the deal for the Oilers home win. The good news is that they come to our home ice on March 7th! So, a chance to even the odds this season is still open, but as for tonight, they extend their winning streak to fourteen.

Our next game is Thursday as we head to Calgary and face Johnny Gaudreau's former Flames. Take note, this is another late game with a puck drop at 9:00 p.m. here in Ohio.

Go CBJ!
