Patrik Laine Traded Ahead of 2024-25 NHL Season

We all knew it was on the horizon, but even still, it's bittersweet to see Patrik Laine leaving Columbus. He was a fan favorite, and although it's hard to see him move on, I know the same fans want what's best for him. Over his four seasons with the Blue Jackets, he appeared in 174 games. In that time, he had 64 goals and 74 assists, giving him 138 points in a Blue Jackets jersey. His final of the four seasons was particularly tough, riddled with injuries that came to a concerning conclusion when he entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program at the end of January. He was recently cleared to exit the program, but before made his desire clear to move on from Columbus. Today, it was announced he'd get his wish as the Center now heads back to Canada to join the Montreal Canadians.

In the end, Patrik Laine gets the fresh start he needs, and the Columbus Blue Jackets get something they need in return. We lost Laine and our Round 2 Pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, but in return, it appears we'll have no part in paying Laine's remaining salary, and we've received Jordan Harris, a Defenseman who's been in the league three seasons. The Defenseman was picked by the Montreal Canadians in the 2018 Draft, going in the 3rd round with their 9th Pick (71.) He's played 131 games for the Canadians, accumulating 8 goals and 24 for 32 points. Over this time, he also has a +3. He's 5'11 and 189 pounds, so not bad, and reminds me a bit of Nick Blankenburg who had a solid role on this team before we let him go and he signed with the Nashville Predators this offseason. To me, he could be a small but mighty secret weapon on the defense, and I like that idea.

Again, I wish Patrik Laine nothing but the best. He got engaged a few weeks ago, and with this new start in Canada with the Canadians, I hope he finds a solid home he can thrive in. I also hope he continues doing his charity work; his decision to donate money to causes close to his heart for every point he collected in the NHL was an amazing gesture I loved him for. In addition, I welcome Jordan Harris to Columbus, and I hope he has a winning home here for seasons to come!
