Edmonton Oilers @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 8

The last time we saw the Blue Jackets it was in Music City. The Nashville Predators took the Columbus Blue Jackets to overtime and quickly stole the second point up for grabs with a 4-3 win. So, naturally, the Blue Jackets weren't thrilled about only gaining one point in that game and came to play this evening stronger than the last, and boy did they!

Period one would be a goalscoring party for the home team! Sean Monahan would get the party started early on the first powerplay of the evening, scoring just 2:18 into the first period. This was his fourth goal in eight games. Kirill Marchenko would have the primary assist on this goal, his sixth already this season, and Zach Werenski wouldn't be far behind, picking up his fifth assist with the secondary assist on this opening goal. The Edmonton Oilers would also lose their Captain, Conner McDavid, early into this period. Later on, it'd be announced he'd be out for the full game. I sincerely hope he's alright and wish him the best. I always hate seeing great players being taken from the game due to injury. The game would continue on and the Blue Jackets would build on their lead thanks to Adam Fantilli's third goal of the season, scored at 10:44. The only assist on this goal would become Cole Sillingeers' fourth this season. A few minutes later, at 14:32, Cole Sillinger would have a goal all his own, his second of the season. The Oilers would have no answer for the Blue Jackets strong period, even after multiple powerplays towards the end of the period, and the Blue Jackets would carry a 3-0 lead into the second period.

Only one goal would come in the second period, and it would be from red-hot Mathieu Olivier. The man's having a moment, and at 7:04 he'd add his fourth goal of the season to his point sheet, taking the Jackets to a 4-0 lead. James van Riemsdyk would gain his first assist on this lone period two-goal, and we'd go into a third period with a sizable 4-0 Jackets lead!

"Congratulations, what a thrill," John Davidson said when Mikael Pyyhtia scored his first NHL Goal at 15:14 of period three! What a happy moment for him and I extend my own congratulations to him as well. The puck would be passed to him from Adam Fantilli with his second assist on this goal, and Cole Sillinger with his fifth. Just over a minute later it would be Sean Monahan's turn to score again, getting his fifth goal this season at 16:30! This goal would get Yegor Chinakov back on the score sheet with his fifth assist this season, and Kirill Marchenko would add his seventh. Of course, the Oilers had to rain on Elvis Merzlikin's parade. At 19:32, M. Ekholm would prevent the shutout and score for the Oilers. Even still, the final tonight at Nationwide Arena would be 6-1 Blue Jackets WIN! And, yes, it's another win with six goals scored. I don't know what the trend is, but if we win, 6 can be our lucky number!

We had nine men on the point sheet tonight, and they're listed below. It's a great night when players with a multipoint night don't even make the top three stars because too many players shined bright. Great job, Jackets!

Kirill Marchenko 0-2-2

Zach Werenski 0-1-1

Adam Fantilli 0-2-2 Third Star of the Game

Cole Sillinger 1-2-3 Second Star of the Game

Mathieu Oliver 1-0-1

James van Ryemsdyk 0-1-1

Mikael Pyyhtia 1-0-1 (First NHL GOAL!)

Yegor Chinakov (0-1-1

Elvis Merzlikins: A stunning .969 Save Percentage as he stopped 31 of the 32 Oilers shots he faced tonight. This earned him the First Star of the Game tonight!

Our next game is on Wednesday night as the team celebrates Halloween with the New York Islanders at 7:00 p.m. Tonight was a fun time, so let's keep it rolling!

GO CBJ!
