Columbus Blue Jackets @ San Jose Sharks: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 12
The battle in San Jose tonight into today would be real. Period one would see no goals from either team, but a lot of grit and determination to score. That focus carried over for both teams into period two, and it would appear as if the Sharks had the first goal of the game early, but even though they got the puck past Elvis Merzlikins, a review would be initiated at the request of the Blue Jackets and the goal would be quickly reversed and ruled as goaltender interference. The Sharks would get that goal back at the bitter end of this period, though, as J. Thompson would come through for his home team with his first goal this season. W. Smith would have his first assist of the season and it would be the third assist of the season for F. Zetterlund, coming through with the secondary. The final seconds would tick off the clock and the second period would come to a close with a 1-0 Sharks lead.
The Blue Jackets would come out charging, looking for the tying goal in period three. Vitek Vanecek would be a brick wall in the Sharks' net, but finally, at 9:17, Kirill Marchenko would come through for the visiting Blue Jackets with his fifth goal this season, tying the game! Damon Severson would add his fourth assist this season with the primary assist while Yegor Chinakov would add his sixth with the secondary assist. This would be the only goal of the third period and at 1:05 a.m. in the Eastern Time Zone, it would be time for the Blue Jackets second overtime this season. Surprisingly, this was after the Blue Jackets had forty-nine shots on goal, and the Sharks had roughly half with twenty-five.
The overtime period would be full of incredible chances for both teams to score, and highlight-real worthy saves by both Merzlikins and Vanecek. At 3:11, the overtime would end as a former Blue Jacket would put this game to bed. Alexander Wennberg would add his third goal this season, unassisted, and capture the extra point up for grabs for his home team. The Sharks win 2-1, and the Blue Jackets remain defeated in overtime this season. It wasn't the two points expected tonight, but I'll never dismiss a point because I've seen the postseason come down to a handful, and you never know what could happen come March or even April. The final shots on goal were fifty-one for the Blue Jackets and twenty-seven for the Sharks. Elvis Merzlikins finished with a .926 Save Percentage with twenty-five saves on those twenty-seven shots on goal.
It's unfortunate, but as I said, one point is better than none, especially at the start of a long road trip. Our next game will be on Saturday evening, November 9th, at 9:00 p.m.
