Pitsburgh Penguins @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 16
It's good to be back after taking Tuesday off due to being sick. It's also nice when the Jackets score the first goal of the game, especially against a team we have so much history with! Zach Asten-Reese sent his fourth puck to the back of the net at 2:20! Jake Christiansen would pick up his fifth assist of the season while Kevin Labanc would add his eight. (He's really been a great pickup for us this season.) At 8:39, the Jackets would then go up 2-0 on the Penguins with a goal from Zach Werenski, and on the powerplay too! Yegor Chinakov would add his seventh assist on this powerplay goal while Adam Fantilli added his fifth. Now, of course, the Penguins couldn't let us go into the locker room with a 2-0 lead after one period; they'd score by way of A, Beauvillier at 11:51. S. This would mark his sixth goal this season. Crosby, the man, the myth, the Pittsburgh legend would have the only assist on this goal, his twelfth this season. So, after a very active period one, the Jackets would lead by a goal, 2-1.
The Penguins would even the odds at 2-2 at 12:08 of period two with a goal from M. Bunting. This would be his third of the season and be scored on a Penguins Powerplay, too. A. Beauvillier and D. O'Connor would both pick up their second assists this season on this goa. But, have no fear, Mathieu Oliver is here and having his best season ever! He'd come up with the go-ahead goal at 16:27, establishing the Jackets' lead with his fifth goal this season. Zach Werenski gains his eight assist and begins another multipoint game tonight while Dante Fabbro picks up his first assist as a Jacket! The Jackets again would go into the locker room with a one-goal lead, 3-2.
The Jackets would come out and take charge again with their fourth goal of the night just 1:56 into the final regulation period. Dimitri Voronkov would have his second goal of his shortened season, returning just a few games ago from injury, and he's doing great! Kirill Marchenko enters the double-digit assist club with his tenth on this goal while Sean Monahan adds his sixth. Damon Severson would then double the Jackets goals this period with his fourth this season at 9:49. Sean Monahan would add a second assist to his numbers tonight, his seventh this season overall. The secondary assist would ensure Dimitri Vornonkov having a multipoint night as he'd add his first assist to his numbers this season! So, 5th Line, that's a 5-2 Jackets lead! Cole Sillinger would then put the cherry on top when the Penguins pulled Goaltender T. Jarry and popped it into an empty net! This would be Silly's third goal this season and it came at 15:33. Ivan Provorov would add his fourth assist this season and Justin Danforth would add his fifth with this goal. With fifteen players contributing to the final 6-2 WIN tonight, the Jackets break their six-game losing streak, and against the best possible opponent too! 3.
Zach Werenski would be awarded the First Star of the Game after a 1-1-2 evening.
Dimitri Voronkov would be awarded the Second Star of the Game after a 1-1-2 evening.
Sean Monahan would be awarded the Third Star of the Game after a 0-2-2 evening. Also, a huge congratulations to Monahan on reaching 300 Assists in his NHL Career tonight!
Truly, though, tonight was an amazing win from every Jackets player contributing. Also worth noting, Elvis Merzlikins had a .913 Save Percentage with his 21 saves on the Penguins' 23 shots on our net. Not a bad way to celebrate your 200th NHL Game! Congratulations, Elvis!
The Blue Jackets will be back on the ice in less than 24 hours as they fly to Montreal to play the Canadians at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night. We'll reconvene then, 5th Line! Enjoy the epic win over a heated rival!
GO CBJ!
