Winnipeg Jets @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 10
Tonight was a true test for the Columbus Blue Jackets because, even at home, facing the best team in the NHL is always a tall order. The Jets came into tonight with just one loss in their first ten games this season. That said, Elvis Merzlikins and the Blue Jackets have been hot recently. Let's recap this game!
At 5:13, the Jets would strike first with a goal from N. Ehlers; this is his fifth of the season. With just one assist on this goal, C. Miller gains his fourth this season. The Blue Jackets would have an answer for this goal at 11:02 with Sean Kuraly's first goal this season! James van Riemsdyk would have the loan assist on this goal, his second this season. N. Ehlers would prove to be hot this evening, though, scoring his second goal of the period at 15:14. This would become his sixth goal of the season. V. Namestmikov would have the loan assist, giving him six this season. The period would close with a 2-1 Jets lead ahead of the second period.
The second period would see the Jets opening up the scoring yet again. The first goal would be from M. Appleton, his fourth goal this season. There would be two assists on this goal, the primary being N. Plonk's tenth this season and the secondary being A. Lowry's seventh. The second goal of this period would be the second goal of the Blue Jackets, and on the powerplay to boot! Sean Monahan would find his sixth goal of the season at 16:30! Zach Werenski would add his sixth assist of the season to his tally sheet, and Kirill Marchenko would have the secondary, adding his eighth. Unfortunately, before the period could close, N. Ehlers' hot streak would continue as he completed the hattrick at 18:51. This would be the final goal of the period and give the Jets a two-goal lead heading into the final period of regulation.
The Jets would prove unstoppable in period three. The Jets would increase their lead to 5-2 with a goal from J, Morrissey on the powerplay at 11:39. M. Schelfele would have his eighth assist on this goal as the primary while N. Ehlers would add another point to his night with the secondary. The final goal of the evening would be scored by G. Vilardi at 14:54, giving him four goals this season. K. Connor would have the primary assist, giving him nine this season while J. Morrissey would add his eleventh with the secondary. The Jets would finish the night 10-1-0 with their 6-2 win this evening.
Tonight wasn't ideal, but the Blue Jackets are still building themselves up and the Jets are proving they're already in the hunt for the 2025 Stanley Cup. The Blue Jackets fell under fire early, the Jets ultimately having 43 shots on our net, and even with six goals, Elvis finished the night with a .860 save percentage. Some good blocks happened to prevent more, but this was a David and Goliath situation for sure and we weren't the strongest team by far. Getting there is still the goal, though, and I see good things happening.
The Blue Jackets will have to sleep off this loss fast as they board the plane and head to the nation's capital for a 5:00 p.m. game tomorrow night at the Washington Capitals. I will be working, so the recap will be a bit shorter, but there will be one! Let's hope for a better outcome then, 5th Line!
Go CBJ!
