Columbus Blue Jackets @ Edmonton Oilers: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 25
A hop, skip, and a jump after an emotional night in Calgary Tuesday lands us in Edmonton to face the Oilers at home Thursday. Since then, one particular Blue Jacket was given some incredible news. A deserved honor for Zach Werenski, the Columbus defenseman will play in the upcoming 2025 4-Nations Face Off in February! Of course, I'd have been more surprised had he not been selected after his electric start to the 2024-25 NHL Season. Days ago he landed himself in his franchise's record books again by having the longest point streak for a defenseman with eight games. That did sadly end in Calgary Tuesday, but I'm sure he won't be off the point sheet long! Why? This season in just twenty-four games he's already had 26 points with 8-18-26. I look forward to watching him continue his collection of points this season and seeing him play in February for Team U.S.A. Congratulations, #8! Now, let's focus on the now and recap a hockey game, 5th Line!
The scoring would start early this late night with a goal from the visiting team! Yes, the Blue Jackets would make it on the board first at 2:31 with the second goal of the season from Kevin Labanc. Mikael Pyyhtia would pick up his first assist on the season on this goal while Zach Werenski would find his way back on the point sheet, scoring the secondary assist and taking him to nineteen this season. See, I told y'all it wouldn't take long! Z. Hyman would remind us how talented the Oilers are at 9:48, tying the game with his fourth goal this season. C. McDavid, the man, myth, and aspiring legend would add his twentieth assist this season; a crazy thought considering he missed time this season for an injury he suffered when these teams last met in Columbus. The secondary assist would go to E. Bouchard, his thirteenth this season. No further goals would come in the opening period and we'd enter period two with a 1-1 tie.
Things would get interesting in period two, and not in the Jackets' favor. L. Draisaitl would pop one past Daniil Tarasov at 2:22. This would be his eighteenth goal this season and give C. McDavid his twenty-first assist this season and E. Bouchard his fourteenth. The Jackets would question and then challenge the goal for goaltender interference but this wouldn't shake out in favor of the Jackets and they would be given a Delay of Game penalty. M. Ekholm would take advantage of this at 4:02 with his third goal of the season. J. Skinner would add his fifth assist this season while D. Nurse would add his eighth. Z. Hyman would increase his goal total this season to five at 6:53. This would take the Oilers up to a three-goal lead. R. Nugent-Hopkins would add his ninth assist this season to his point total while C. McDavid continues to roll with his twenty-second assist this season and his third tonight. At 10:02, Damon Severson would inject some life back into the Jackets' with his fifth goal this season. Cole Sillinger adds his thirteenth assist while Adam Fantilli adds his eighth this season. Unfortunately, toward the end of the middle period, Dante Fabro took a four-minute high-stick penalty after scratching K. Kapanen with his stick. The Jackets would manage to kill the extended powerplay, but the Oilers would have one more goal up their sleeve from J. Skinner at 18:30. This would be his fifth goal this season. A. N. Henrique would have his seventh assist on this goal while M. Janmark would add his tenth. So, after a lot of activity, the Jackets would find themselves down 5-2 with twenty minutes of regulation to go.
The Jackets would continue to fight back as Cole Sillinger would open the scoring for the third period with his fourth goal of the season at 6:10. The primary assist would be the first for Jordan Harris while the secondary assist would go to Jake Christiansen and it would be his sixth this season. But, alas, the Oilers fight wouldn't end either and L. Draisaitl would score on the powerplay at 13:37 and this would give him nineteen goals this season. C. McDavid would add yet another assist to his total tonight, giving him four this evening and twenty-three across the season so far. R. Nugent-Hopkins would come away with his second assist tonight and tenth this season. This would bring the game to a 6-3 Oilers lead and that's how the game would inevitably close out. Daniil Tarasov final save percentage was.838; this was on 37 shots with 31 saves.
The Jackets will travel to Vancouver to face the Canucks tomorrow night, so at least there isn't too much time to dwell on this loss. The game is late, puck drop will be at 10:00 p.m.
Go CBJ!
