Philidelphia Flyers @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 28
After an inspired win against the Winnipeg Jets in Winnipeg over the weekend the Blue Jackets would return home with the intention of winning against the visiting Philidelphia Flyers. Unfortunately, tonight's game wasn't as simple. Elvis Merzlikings would have an unlucky rebound hit his arm and go into the net early into period one, putting the Flyers up 1-0. That goal would go to N. Cates and become his second this season. The goal scored at 4:37 would also give T. Foerster his fourth assist this season and C. York his second. A few minutes later, at 10:56, O. Tippett would add his ninth goal to his season and bring the visiting Flyers to a 2-0 lead. J. Drysaale would add his third assist on this goal this season while teammate M. Frost would add his eighth. Thankfully, the period would end without another goal and the Jackets would only be at a two-goal deficit after one period of play.
Things wouldn't improve in period two as the Flyers would get a powerplay due to an elbowing call against Mathiew Oliver. On this powerplay, the Flyers would go up 3-0 with a goal from T. Konecny at 6:11, his fourteenth this season. B. Brink would add his ninth assist this season while M. Michkov would add his fifteenth. But, a light would shine on Zach Werenski at 16:56, continuing his record-setting season. This would become his ninth goal this season, and on the powerplay no less! Kirill Marchenko would gain the primary assist, giving him seventeen this season while Sean Monahan would add his sixteenth with the secondary. Unfortunately, the Flyers would snatch back their three-goal lead quickly with an even-strength goal at 19:00. It would become T. Koneny's second goal of the night and fifteenth this season. J. Farabee would pick up his seventh assist of the season while N,, Seekler would add his eighth. So, with only twenty minutes to go in regulation, the Jackets would have a hill to climb, down 4-1. It's worth noting that in this period, Mathiew Oliver had a fight with N. Seeler that he definitely won. It was with the five-minute misconducts!
That hill would grow steeper with yet another goal from the Flyers early into period three. M. Frost would score his third goal this season at 1:55. M. Michkov would have the only assist on this goal, giving him sixteen this season. The Jackets wouldn't be done fighting back yet as Sean Monahan would score his ninth goal of the season at 11:42. Dante Fabro would add his fourth assist this season with the primary while Kent Johnson would keep his scoring ways going with his seventh assist this season with the secondary. I will hand it to the Jackets this year, no matter how much time is on the clock or how far down they are, this team will not stop fighting to score. It's a massive improvement from last season. Case in point, Kent Johnson would score his ninth goal this season at 19:21. 0:39 left in the game and this team is still pushing. Damon Severson would add his tenth assist on this goal by Johnson while James van Riemsdyk would add his fifth. The final score would give the Flyers the win, 5-3, but at least the Jackets didn't give up and that's good motivation to carry into Thursday as we play another top-tier team in the league. The Washington Capitals will be in town for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop, and I'll have the recap of it for you here.
Also, even with the loss tonight, Sean Monahan would get awarded the Third Star of the Game. He had a goal tonight. Congrats, #23!
