Columbus Blue Jackets @ New York Islanders: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 47
The Blue Jackets went into their second of four road games tonight looking for more points, and the game started out promising. At 4:52, Kent Johnson would add goal thirteen to his 2024-25 NHL Season, and on the powerplay, too! Kirill Marchenko would skate away with the primary assist, his thirty-third this season while Dimitri Voronkov would add his fourteenth this season on the secondary. The visiting Jackets would hold off a fast Islanders team and lead 1-0 after period one. Unfortunately, this would not hold through period two.
It's been some time since the Jackets had a breakdown in period two, but tonight was just that. The Islanders' B. Horvat would tie the game with his fifteenth goal this season just 0:43 into the second period. B. Barzzal would add his eleventh assist this season while teammate A. Pelech would add his ninth. The Islanders would then take their first lead of the evening with S. Holmstrom's tenth goal of the season on our powerplay, equaling a shorthanded goal for the home team. J. Pageau would add his thirteenth assist this season on the only for this goal. Then, the Islanders would double that lead at 5:47 with B. Horvat's second goal tonight and his sixteenth this season. This was a powerplay goal. M. Barzel would add his second assist tonight and twelfth this season with the primary while N. Dobson would add his eighteenth on the secondary. So, a 1-0 Jackets lead quickly fell to a 3-1 Islanders lead. Thankfully, that's where it would stay after forty minutes of play, but it's the deepest hole the Jackets have had to come back from in a third period in some time.
Period three would not yield the comeback we'd be hoping for. The Islanders came out fast, got down in period one, and came out ready to play in period two. From that point on, they never looked back. The Jackets would get a few good shots in the third but none would convert to a goal. B. Horvat wouldn't complete the hat trick, but his team still gets the 2 points at home as the Islanders win 3-1.
The next Blue Jackets game will continue the road trip in Canada. We will face the Maple Leafs at home on Wednesday. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m.
