Detroit Red Wings @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 39

Happy New Year, 5th Line!

The last Jackets game was an exhilarating fourth-round shootout win against the Hurricanes on New Year's Eve. Tonight, the Jackets would return to home ice and score first against the visiting Red Wings. This goal would become the fifth for James van Riemsdyk at 2:42, and on the powerplay, too! Cole Sillinger would pick up assist number fifteen this season with the primary while Ivan Provorov would pick up assist number twelve with the secondary. Unfortunately, this period would close out with three unanswered goals by the Red Wings after the Jackets initially went up 1-0. The first goal would be at 6:55 by P. Kane, his eighth this season. The primary assist would be number nine for A. Copp this season and the secondary would be number fourteen for A. DeBrincat. Goal two would be E. Gustafsson's first goal this season, coming at 14"39. The only assist on this goal would belong to J, Holl. his third this season. This period's final goal would be on the powerplay at 17:09, becoming A. DeBrincat's sixteenth this season. This goal had two assists, the primary was M. Seider's seventeenth this season while the secondary would become B. Larkin's seventeenth this season. So, a quick turn of events as the game went from a 1-0 Jackets lead to a 3-1 Red Wings lead, but at least there were still forty minutes to play and boy did our Jackets come back in period two!

There would be just two goals in period two, and they would close the gap the Jackets found themselves in at the end of period one. Zach Werenski would become the solo franchise record holder for a consecutive home point streak (14 games) with his twelfth goal this season at 11:09! Adam Fantilli would have the only assist on this goal, his ninth this season. Sean Monahan would have the tying goal at 18:40, his fourteenth goal of the season. James van Riemsdyk would gain a multipoint night with his goal in period one and the primary assist on this goal in period two. The second assist on this goal, to no surprise, would be Zach Werenski's who is already up to thirty this season. As I said, all goals belonged to the Jackets this period and with only two the goal gap would close and we'd go into period three tied at 3-3-.

The Red Wings would break the tie. D. Larkin would have the go-ahead, powerplay goal, at 4:54, and this would become his fourteenth goal of the season. The primary assist on this goal would become A, DeBrincat's fifteenth assist this season and second tonight while teammate P. Kane would acquire a multipoint night with a goal in period one and his eleventh assist this season with the secondary on this goal. Hold on, though, because this Jackets team doesn't know the word 'quit' this season and I love it! James van Riemsdyk would add his sixth goal of the season and second tonight at 17:19, tying the game again! Adam Fantilli would add his ninth assist this season with the primary and his second assist tonight while Zach Werenski would add his thirty-first assist this season with the secondary and also his second assist tonight. The Red Wings would challenge this goal for goaltender interference and after review, none would be found. The Jackets would get a powerplay but not score, and then, J, Berggren would fly out of the box and score his sixth goal of the season at 19:24. T Motte would add his first assist of the season with the primary on this goal. The Jackets couldn't match this final go-ahead goal in the final seconds and what a heartbreaker tonight in Nationwide Arena as the Red Wings won 5-4 in regulation. Ugh.

With his 2-1-3 night, James van Riemsdyk would be awarded the Second Star of the Game tonight.

Our next game will be on January 4th at Nationwide Arena as we welcome the St. Louis Blues to town. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m.

Go CBJ!
