Philidelphia Flyers @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 44

After a thrilling road win to mark four in a row, on the road, at the Blues, the Jackets would take home ice tonight, welcoming the Philadelphia Flyers to Nationwide Arena. The Flyers came off a huge win at home last night against the Florida Panthers, the final score being 4-3. So, tonight's game was promised to be competitive and delivered.

The Flyers' B. Brink would strike first with his fifth goal this season at 3:44. N. Seeler would add his tenth assist on the primary while teammate J. Drysdale would add his ninth on the secondary. Zach Werenski would play Robbin Hood and steal a puck, charging the Flyers' net and scoring his fourteenth goal this season at 10:27. This goal would make him the leader in goals for defenseman across the league and be unassisted but far from underappreciated as this goal does more than just knot the game at 1-1. Zach Werenski becomes the first defenseman to have a 17-game point streak this century! This hasn't been done since Ray Borque in 1993. Yeah, go Zach! The period would wrap with this same score, and it wouldn't change until period three, believe it or not!

O. Tippett who loves to tip in the puck would score the third, elusive goal of this game at 8:13. This marks goal thirteen this season for him. The lone assist on this goal would belong to Flyers' M. Frost, his thirteenth this season. But, Zach Werenski wasn't done making history tonight. At 15:23, with his fifteenth goal this season, he becomes the fastest Columbus Blue Jacket in history to reach fifty points with a 15-35-50 this season! The man is having a season, no question! Kirill Marchenko would add his thirtieth goal this season with the primary, extending his point streak to five games, while Adam Fantilli gains the secondary assist, his twelfth this season, extending his own point streak to six. Yes, that is the longest point streak in his NHL career. What a night, and with no more goals in period three, it wouldn't end in regulation!

If you're a longtime Jackets fan, this next sentence doesn't surprise you. A log of great shots came in overtime, from both teams, but this game would go to a shootout! Before I move on, with Daniil Tarasov only being in Cleveland for two back-to-back games and then brought back after, I was nervous about him starting tonight. My doubts were unfounded, and he was solid tonight, through regulation and this overtime. But, now, it was time for a shootout.

Kent Johnson would be up first, and he would score! Adam Fantilli would have his shot saved. But, the Flyers wouldn't get their third shot after Kirill Marchenko scored as the Jackets' third shooter! The Jackets win tonight at home, 3-2. The Flyers may have gotten a point for overtime, but the Jackets skate away with two and continue their longest win streak this season with five!

The Third Star of the Game was Kirill Marchenko who finished the night with a 0-1-1.

The Second Star of the Game was Daniil Tarasov, who proved all the doubters wrong tonight about whether he was ready to jump back on the ice. He finished tonight with a .920 save percentage, doing this with 23 saves on the Flyers' 25 shots!

The First Star of the Game was Zach Werenski who made so much history tonight it'd make a puck spin! He's the fastest Jackets player in the history of our franchise to reach 50 points 15-35-50 in just 44 games. He's the only defenseman in the NHL this century with a 17-game home-point streak. He leads the NHL in defenseman in BOTH goals and points. What he's done is incredible this season, and we're just a few games over the halfway point of the regular season. Tonight, he finishes with a 2-0-2.

Our next game will be at home Thursday night. The San Jose Sharks will fly across the country to face a hot Jackets team at 7:00 p.m.

GO CBJ!
