St. Louis Blues @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 40

The Columbus Blue Jackets would look to bounce back from their heartbreaking 5-4 home loss last game against the visiting Detroit Red Wings. The St. Louis Blues were on the backside of a road back-to-back, having shutout the Ottawa Senators 4-0 roughly twenty-four hours ago. The Jackets were motivated, though, and they proved such in period one. The home team ran the ice with 16 shots on goal compared to just six for the visiting Blues. Best of all, one of those sixteen shots would result in goal number fourteen this season for Dimitri Voronkov at 19:01, giving the Jackets a late 1-0 lead! With the primary assist, his thirty-second this season, Zach Werenski would extend his home-point streak to fifteen games. In addition, with the secondary assist, Ivan Provorov would add his thirteenth this season. With no other goals in the final 0:59 of the period, that 1-0 lead would carry over into period two.

The Jackets would again run the ice in period two. Kirill Marchenko would score goal seventeen of the season on an early powerplay just 2:15 into the period. Sean Monahan would add his twenty-fourth assist this season with the primary assist while the secondary would become Kent Johnson's twelfth this season. The Jackets would hold the Blues back for a second period of play and the Jackets would take a 2-0 lead into the final regulation period. Also, a fight between Mathiew Oliver and T. Tucker would close out this period. Both players would leave the ice around the 18:34 mark with five-minute fighting majors.

The Jackets would get a tripping penalty assessed to Zach Aston-Reese, but no need to worry, Mikael Pyyhtia gets a short-handed goal and it's 3-0 Jackets! This is Mikael Pyyhtia's fourth goal this season. Ivan Provorov would have the only assist on this goal, his fourteenth this season and second tonight. Unfortunately, J. Kyrou would ruin Elvis Merzlikins' chance at a shutout with his seventeenth goal this season at 4:54. B. Schenn would add his fifteenth assist this season and he'd have the only assist on the Blues' first goal of the game. Not even a minute later, Adam Fantilli would add the fourth goal of the game to the Jackets total this evening. His eighth goal of the season would come at 5:25 and give Zach Werenski his thirty-third assist of the season and second tonight while putting Dante Fabro on the point sheet with his sixth assist this season. C. Fowler would show that the Blues weren't ready to give up on this game, scoring his fourth goal this season at 6:55. D. Halloway would pick up assist number fourteen with the primary while teammate J, Kyrou would pick up his seventeenth with the secondary. Dimitri Voronkov would go on hattrick watch for a second game in a row after scoring his fifteenth goal of the season at 7:24. Sean Monahan would add the primary assist to his point total, giving himself two assists tonight and twenty-five this season while the secondary assist would become number two this season for Jordan Harris. And, after an eventful few minutes, the Jackets would find themselves leading 5-3! Again, the Blues would prove they had no plans to go away quietly, scoring by way of C. Parayo at 12:54. This would become his seventh goal this season. P. Buchnevich would add his seventeenth assist of the season with the primary while former Jacket, Alexander Texieer, would add his fifth with the secondary. Down two goals, the Blues would opt to pull their goaltender, Joel Hofer and their move would pay off with another goal, making it 5-4 at 16:16. This goal would become number eight this season for B. Schenn. C. Fowler would add his ninth assist this season and second tonight with the primary on this goal while teammate J. Neighbours would add his tenth with the secondary. The Blues would again pull the goaltender but this time it would end in our favor with goal number ten this season for Mathiew Olivier! Ivan Provorov would add his fifteenth assist this season and his third assist tonight with the primary while Cole Sillinger would pick up the secondary, his sixteenth this season. This would be enough to wrap this two-point present to a sold-out Nationwide Arena crowd! The Jackets win on home ice 6-4! This team does not know the word 'quit' this season, and wow, it's amazing to see.

The Third Star of the Game tonight would be Ivan Provorov with a 0-3-3 night.

The Second Star of the Game tonight would be Sean Monahan with a 0-2-2 night.

The First Star of the Game tonight would be Dimitri Voronkov with a 2-0-2 night.

Oh, that was fun! Now, let's take this winning mentality on the road to, oh, I don't know...Pittsburgh! I am ready for a win against the Penguins on their ice. That game will start at 7:00 p.m. on January 7th.

GO CBJ!
