Columbus Blue Jackets @ Detroit Red Wings: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 59

Tonight's 2025 Columbus Blue Jackets Mom's Trip would start with a stone-cold start in period one. The score would be 0-0 after a goaltender clinic between Jackets Daniil Tarasov and Red Wings C. Talbot. This would do a full 365 degree turn around in period two when six, yes, six goals were scored.

An unfortunate bit of information before we recap that big second period. Cole Sillinger would not play the rest of the game. I don't know what happened, but hopefully he'll be okay so he can play in his first Stadium Series on Saturday. I would hate for him to miss it.

The first goal of period two would come from the home team's D. DeBrincat. His twenty-seventh goal this season would come at 00:27. The only assist on this goal would become the eighteenth this season for J. Compher. After this goal, the visiting Jackets would kick it into high gear. James van Rymsdyk would add the Jackets' first goal of the game at 4:16. This goal would be his thirteenth this season and give Jake Christiansen his seventh assist this season on the primary and Captain Boone Jenner his third on the secondary. Sean Kuraly would then achieve his fifth goal this season at 9:43 after catching a rebound off C. Talbot, settling on the ice and popping it past C. Talbot with his stick. This goal was as cool as it sounds, trust me. Mathieu Oliver would pick up the secondary, giving him his ninth assist this season while Joe LaBate would acquire his first assist as a Jacket and first point in the NHL. Congratulations to him! The Jackets would double their lead with Kent Johnson's twentieth goal this season at 12:08. Dante Fabro would enter the double-digit assist club with his tenth this season on the primary while Captain Boone Jenner would add his fourth assist this season and second of the night. But, wait 5th Line, we're still not done because James van Rymsdyk wanted to put himself on hattrick watch at 15:01! This is his fourteenth goal of the season. This goal would give Captain Boone Jenner his fifth assist this season and his third, yes, third assist tonight and in the same period no less! Kent Johnson would also go to a 1-1-2 night after picking up the secondary on this second van Rymsdyke goal. J. Compher would add his seventh goal on a Red Wings powerplay at 16:39, but the Jackets would still take a two-goal lead into period three. That said, the primary assist on this Red Wings goal would become number nine for J. Berggren and the secondary would become number fourteen for E. Gustafsson. Whew. So, after an electric and entertaining second period, the score would be Jackets 4, Red Wings 2.

It would appear as if Sean Kuraly had another goal early in period three, but with a kicking motion detected on replay it would be removed from the scoreboard and it would remain a 4-2 Jackets lead. That is, until Kirill Marchenko added his twenty-fourth goal this season, unassisted, at 18:58. This would be an empty net goal. The last 1:02 would tick by and the Jackets would win this road game 5-2 and make it an exciting and successful Columbus Blue Jackets Mom's Trip!

With this game in the books, the Jackets have won their last three games, a perfect 3/3 after the 4-Nations Face-Off 2025. We now have 66 points and are tied with the Red Wings for the First Wild Card Spot. So, as if the Michigan Vs. Ohio Stadium Series in the Shoe wasn't going to be huge already, let's add another layer, shall we? Oh, this is gonna be too fun!

Second Star of the Game would go to 0-3-3 Captain Boone Jenner.

First Star of the Game would go to 2-0-2 James van Rymsdyk.

Special star consideration? Daniil Tarasov did amazing tonight in net, especially for not starting in a month with Elvis Merzlikins' recent success as starting goaltender. Terry finished tonight with 29 saves on the Red Wings' 31 shots on goal. This game gave him a .935 save percentage. Great job, #40!

After months of planning, it's actually here. On Saturday, Columbus, Ohio and the Columbus Blue Jackets will host their first Stadium Series Outdoor NHL Game. The thought alone makes me want to cry because this franchise and its fans have waited so long for this moment at The Horseshoe. This will be an epic evening. The puck will drop at 6:00 p.m. and I cannot wait to recap it for you here afterward.

GO CBJ!
