Columbus Blue Jackets @ Ottawa Senators: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 72

After last night's 2025 Kids Takeover Game at Nationwide Arena, which ended with a 7-6 victory in a shootout against the Vancouver Canucks, the Blue Jackets would look to snatch more points tonight. This game at the Ottawa Senators has two important components: Win points for ourselves and keep points from the Senators who hold the 1st Wild Card spot in the Eastern Division. A Senators' charge on net at 7:24 would give the home team an early 1-0 lead, thanks to R, Greig's twelfth goal this season. T, Chabot would add his twenty-ninth assist this season on the primary, while S, Pinto would add his thirteenth on the secondary. Seconds later, Blue Jackets' Captain, Boone Jenter, would add his fifth goal this season at 7:55. Zach Werenski would continue his team lead in assists, adding his fifty-first on this goal primary assist. The secondary would go to Denton Mateychuk, his sixth in a season that has seen him improve leaps and bounds. Sadly, the Senators would break the 1-1 tie before the first period could close. The goal would come from D. Batherson, becoming his twenty-first of the season. D. Cozens would add the primary assist to his season total, giving him twenty-six so far, while Z. Zub would add another to his total this season on the secondary, giving him nine. This would be the final goal of the opening period, and the Senators would carry a one-goal lead into period two.

The only goal this period would take the Senators up two goals. It would come at 9:17 and give J. Sanderson his eighth goal of the season. S. Pinto would add his second assist tonight and fourteenth this season on the primary, while R. Greig would add his sixteenth on the secondary. The Blue Jackets would have only a handful of shots in this period, but keeping the Senators to one goal would be the crowning achievement of this period by far. They would enter period three looking to close the two-goal gap.

Daniil Tarasov would make several stops on the Senators before Kirill Marchenko would bring the Blue Jackets within a goal, again. This goal would come at 11:02 and became his twenty-eighth goal this season. The only assist on this goal would become number fifty-two for Zach Werenski and mark his second assist tonight. The final three minutes of this game would be thrilling. The Blue Jackets would take any shot they could get; they were blocking the empty net, they were pushing for that tying goal, but it wouldn't come. The Blue Jackets would ultimately lose this game 3-2, but it was another good game. (I'd say great if we saw the energy in period two that we saw in periods one and three.)

Our next game will be back in Nationwide Arena on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. We'll welcome former Cleveland Monsters and Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Nick Blankenburg and the Nashville Predators.

Go CBJ!
