Vancouver Canucks @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 71
This was a wild game. Period one would see three goals, none of which would belong to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Vancouver Canucks would score two powerplay goals and one at even strength. The first would come at 8:51 and belong to L. Karlsson, making his second goal of the season. The primary assist on this goal would be number sixteen this season for K. Sherwood, and the secondary assist would be number twenty-six this season for C. Garland. Less than two minutes later, at 10:35, B. Boesser would pop one past Elvis Merzlikins to gain goal twenty-four of his season. Q. Hghes would add his fifty-third assist this season on the primary while P. Sutter would add his eighteenth assist this season on the secondary. This second goal was the only Canucks goal this period not on the powerplay advantage. The third goal of this period would be the final for this twenty-minute block. It would belong to J. Debrusk and would become goal twenty-four of his season. B. Boeser would add assist number twenty-two on this goal with the primary while P. Suter would add assist nineteen on the secondary. The Blue Jackets would have a three-goal hole to dig out of, but remember, I said this was a wild game!
#38 would lead his team's comeback as Captain Boone Jenner would score just 00:34 into period two! Denton Mateychuk would add his fifth assist this season on the primary, while Erik Gudbranson would get his first assist of the season after missing most of it due to shoulder surgery. This was a great moment, indeed. Another would come when Kirill Marchenko scored his team's leading twenty-seventh goal this season at 4:54! Sean Monahan would add assist thirty to his season on the primary while Dante Fabro would add number thirteen on the secondary. Dante Fabro would then double his point total, leaving with a goal of his own, tying the game at 3-3! His goal would come at 6:44, giving Cole Sillinger his twenty-first assist this season and his first since returning from injury in late February. Mathieu Olivier would also add his twelfth assist on the secondary assist. Unfortunately, with the Blue Jackets on the powerplay, Vancouver's T. Myers would add his sixth goal this season at 11:23. K, Sherwood would add his seventeenth assist this season on the primary while P, Suter would add his twentieth. So, after a massive comeback, the Blue Jackets would still need more in period three, and, spoiler alert, they'd get it.
A. Raty would add his fourth goal this season at 6:43, amid the Blue Jackets coming out with the same fire they started period two with. D. Joshua would add his fifth assist this season on the primary while Q, Hughes would add his fifty-fourth on the secondary and add himself to the growing list of multipoint players tonight. At 7:03, Denton Meteychuk would add his fourth goal this season, closing the void to a single-goal Canucks lead again! Boonee Jenner would enter the double-digit assist club with his tenth on the primary, while Adam Fantilli would add his twenty-second on the secondary. Justin Danfoth would appear to have the tying goal, but it would be challenged for goaltender interference and Toronto would side with the Canucks. No worries, Boone Jenner would do Captain things at 16:46, scoring his fourth goal of the season on a later Blue Jackets powerplay, taking the game to 5-5! Kirill Marchenko would add himself to the multipoint list with his thirty-eighth assist on the primary while Zach Werenski would finally hit the summit of fifty assists this season on the secondary. Yes, Zach still has the team lead in the assist category. The Blue Jackeets would take the lead, 6-5, as Mathieu Olivier would add his seventeenth goal this season at 17:08. Dante Fabro would add yet another point with his fourteenth assist on the primary, while Justin Danforth would finally get a point after having his goal taken away early in the period; his tenth assist would add him to the double digit club on the secondary. But, the Canucks just wouldn't let up and they would tie it at 6-6 at 17:31. The goal would become number five this season for A, Raty while D, Joshua would add his sixth assist on the primary and K, Sherwood would add his eighteenth on the secondary. Whew. So, after all of that the Canucks and Blue Jackets would both get a point as we head to yet another overtime.
This game wouldn't be decided in overtime! Many shots were made, but an equal amount of saves were made, too. Kent Johnson would be the first shooter in the shootout, and he'd seal this 7-6 WIN for the home team on the 2025 Kids Takeover Night! What a win, and a huge 2 points for the Columbus Blue Jackets, who now sit at 75 this season! This was a true comeback and a reminder to those who doubt that this team is out to prove you wrong.
Mathieu Oliver would add Third Star of the Game to his 1-1-2 night.
Dante Fabro would add Second Star of the Game to his 1-2-3 night.
Boone Jenner would add First Star of the Game to his 2-1-3 night.
Special Consideration: Congratulations to Erik Gudbranson on his 100th assist tonight.
Final Note: For anyone keeping track of fun 13 moments this season, tonight's win is the 13th time this team has scored 6 or more goals in a game this season. In addition, the former 13 who gave his number to his idol (the legendary Johnny Gaudreau)) upon his arrival in Columbus, he scored the winning goal in the shootout: Kent Johnson.
Our next game is in less than twenty-four hours as the Blue Jackets board a plane to Ottawa. They will play the Senators on the road tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. It will be a huge game as the Senators are ahead of us, meaning we have a chance to win points and take them from another team in a playoff spot. Speaking of, with our win tonight, we are currently in the 2nd Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference! The New York Rangers are still doing battle with the Anaheim Ducks, though, so this could change, but we're right in the thick of it again, 5th Line!
Good luck to the team tomorrow night, and congratulations to our guys on what was the definition of a team win!
GO CBJ!
