Buffalo Sabers @ Columbus Blue Jackets: 2024-25 NHL Season Game 4/10/25

Today wouldn't start well for a team that had to win tonight to stay in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoff hunt. Elvis Merzlikins would be injured in practice, resulting in Jet Greaves being called up from the AHL Cleveland Monsters. He would then go in the Blue Jackets' net immediately tonight. J. Peterka would score his twenty-fifth goal this season on him at 11:54. R. McLeod would add his thirty-first assist this season on the primary while R. Dahlin would add his fourty-eighth on the secondary. This would be followed up by R, Dahlin's sixteenth goal this season at 14:39. Z, Benson would add assist eighteen of his season on the primary while J, Kuilch would add his ninth on the secondary. James van Rymsdyk would slash the Sabers' lead in half in the final seconds of the period, scoring his fifteenth goal this season at 19:51! Kent Johnson would add his thirty-first assist on the primary assist while Zach Werenski would add his team leading fifty-sixth assist on the secondary. The first period would end with a 2-1 Sabers lead.

Period two would yield no goals but an unfortunate update from period one. Jake Christiansen would be ruled out after taking a stick swing to the ribs. Yeah, ouch. I wish him the best and hope the injury isn't as bad as it sounds.

Zach Aston-Reese would even the odds with his sixth goal this season exactly 4:00 into period two! The only assist on this goal would become the third of Erik Gudbranson's season. Jet Greaves would find his groove in period two, blocking pucks at point-blank range with action in front of him. This would allow the Blue Jackets to take the lead on their first chance at the powerplay at 9:42. Captain Boone Jenner would skate away with that powerplay goal, his seventh overall goal of the season. Kirill Marchenko would add assist forty to his season on the primary while Sean Monahan would add his thirty-third on the secondary. The Sabers would take the chance for a six-on-five advantage, pulling their goalie in the moments of this game, but the Blue Jackets would hold them at bay for the home win!

The Third Star of the Game went to Sabers R. Dahlin with a 1-1-2 night.

The Second Star of the Game goes to Boone Jenner, who finished with a 1-0-1 game-winning goal.

The First Star of the Game goes to Jet Greaves. It's amazing to think that Jet Greaves won in net last night for the AHL Cleveland Monsters, 4-3, then came to Columbus after practice this morning and won 3-2. Further, he shut down 39 of the 41 for a .951 save percentage tonight. If Jet Greaves isn't in Columbus when the 2025-26 season begins, I hope there is a valid reason because this young man has earned his spot. Period.

The Blue Jackets currently have 81 points. The Montreal Canadians must lose tomorrow night at the Ottawa Senators for us to stay in the hunt. The Blue Jackets' next game will be Saturday afternoon, 12:30 p.m., as Alex Ovechkin brings his Washington Capitals to town. I am working, so I will miss the whole game. So, I'm sorry to say, there won't be a recap. That said, I'll be cheering this team on as I do, and I'll be back to write a recap as we play the Washington Capitals on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.!

GO CBJ!
