Columbus Blue Jackets @ Buffalo Sabers: Season 25 Game 9

The opening period of this road game for the Columbus Blue Jackets would showcase their talents. Over ten minutes would expire before the Blue Jackets would allow the Sabers to have a shot on Jet Greaves and the visitor's net. Even better, the Blue Jackets would secure the only goal in this period at 6:09. Yegor Chinakov would own this goal, his second of the season, scoring it without an assisting Blue Jacket. The Blue Jackets would cap this opening period with five more shots on goal than the Sabers, 14 to 9. A goal lead would take us into Period 2, which was far more eventful for both teams.

11:39 into Period 2 would see Josh Doan add goal three of his season, as well as tie the game. Alex Tuch would add assist number five to his season, while Conor Timmins would add his third assist this season with the secondary. A few minutes later, at 14:12, Ryan McLeod would bring his home arena to their feet with his third goal of the season, giving his Sabers their first lead tonight. The goal would have two assists, the primary becoming number four for Bowen Byram, while the secondary would become number six for Alex Tuch. It would look as if this 2-1 lead for the Sabers would continue into Period 3, but the Blue Jackets would regain their spark. Alex Tuch would head to the box after interfering with Denton Mateychuk. During his 2-minute penalty, Zach Werenski would add goal two to his season at 19:44, tying the game at 2-2! Kirill Marchenko and Sean Monahan would each pick up assist number four of their season on this goal. Seconds later, at the end of the period, tempers would flare and we'd get a few penalties to start Period 3.

Blue Jackets' Dimitri Voronkov and Kirill Marchenko would each spend the first two minutes of Period 3 in the penalty box, while Sabers' Bowen Byram would spend the first two minutes of Period 3 in the penalty box. This would give the Sabers a power play, and although this wouldn't lead to a goal, Josh Dunn would take back the lead for the Sabers at 2:40 with goal number one of his season. B Malenstyn would add assist number one of his season with the primary, while M Samuelsson would add his fourth on the secondary. The Blue Jackets would continue to push for a tying goal again, and again, they'd find it! Miles Wood, who just returned to the game tonight after a scary stick to the eye during the first home game of the season, would get his first goal of the season at 13:55! Yegor Chinakov would earn a 1-1-2 night as he'd pick up assist number two of his season on the primary, while Dante Fabbro would also pick up his second assist this season on the secondary. This tie would hold, and each team would pick up a point with another on the ice for grabs in overtime!

At 2:53, Miles Wood wouldn't have to knock on wood; he is wood! (I'm sorry, I had to.) All the luck was on his side tonight as he wouldn't just return to the game, but also send it to overtime and then have the winning goal in overtime! This would be his second goal of his season. Zach Werenski would add assist number four to his season with the primary, and have yet another multipoint night, finishing with a 1-1-2. In addition, Isac Lundestrom would add assist number two to his season with the secondary on the overtime winner! 5-4-0 feels good, right, 5th Line?

A great highlight we've waited for: We were 100% on the power play tonight! We had one power play, and Zach Werenski scored on it in Period 2!

Third Star of the Game would go to a hardworking Jet Greaves. The Buffalo Sabers had few shots in Period 1, but they picked up in Periods 2 and 3, they picked up in number. He finished with a .921 save percentage as he stopped 35 of the Sabers' 38 shots on his visitors' net!

Josh Dunne would get the Second Star of the Game, going 1-0-1 for the Sabers tonight.

First Star of the Game would go to Miles Wood, as if anyone else could compare tonight. What perseverance to come back from a scary eye injury to score a tying and game-winning goal in his first game back! Congratulations, man, you deserve this so much!

The Blue Jackets will now hop on a plane and return home. Their next game will see them hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs at Nationwide Arena tomorrow evening. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. If you have young 5th Line fans, get to the Arena early for Halloween fun before the game begins!

GO CBJ!!
