Tampa Bay Lightning @ Columbus Blue Jackets: Season 25, Game 5
Tonight would have a zesty start as the Tampa Bay Lightning faced the Columbus Blue Jackets for the first time this seeason. Just over a minute into the game, the Lightning would come away with a power play after Boone Jenner and Dimitri Voronkov would be each called for roughing, compaired to just one Lightning being called for it, J. J, Moser. Seconds after the Blue Jackets killed the Lightning's first power play oppertunity, Blue Jackets Mathieu Olivier and Lightning's Curtis Douglas would have a true hockey fight, complete with a five minute penilty for each player. After this, the atmosphere would cool until the cannon would egnite with a Birthday Boom for Columbus Blue Jackets' Kent Johnson as he'd score goal number one of his season at 4:58! Not a bad way to start your twenty-third year. This birthday goal would come with two assists, the third this season for Captain Boone Jenner on the primary, and the second this season for Adam Fantilli on the secondary. This is the Lighting, though, and they would of course match our goal at 12:42 as Ryan McDonagh would add his second of the season. Ponrus Holmberg would add his second assist of the season to the score sheete with the primary, while Erik Cernak would gain his first of the season on the secondary. The opening period would close with a go-ahead power play goal after Cole Sillinger would head to the box for hooking former Blue Jacket Oliver Bjorkstrand. Anthony Cirelli would be the goal score at 16:22, giving him three so far this season. Jake Guentzel and Victor Hedmanwould skate away with their fifth assist of the season on this goal.
It would appear as if Blue Jackets Dimitri Voronkov had knotted the game at 2-2 early into Period 2, but the Lightning would see it was offside, challange, and be victorious in removing the second goal for the home team. The Blue Jackets wouldn't stay down long, as Damon Severson would find the back of the visitor net at 13:59, getting his first goal of the season and tying this game! Mathieu Olivier would add his first assist this season with the primary, while Charlie Coyle would add his second on the secondary. The Blue Jackets would preveent a visitor score for the entire period, taking us to an exciting Period 3 with the score still 2-2!
Kirill Marchenko would rewrite Blue Jackets history 1:15 into the final regulation period tonight as he'd score his fifth goal this season. He's now the most scoring Blue Jacket in the first five games of any season in franchise history now! Dimitri Voronkov and Zach Werenski would each get to add a third assist to their season as the Blue Jackets took the lead back from the Lightning with this goal. Jet Greaves and the Blue Jackets would battle to the very end as the Lightning would push to try and tie the game and send it to overtime, but the Blue Jackets would deny them and pick up the 2 points! 5th Line, we're back in the win colum!
Jet Greaves would cap off his first win of the season with a ,895 save percentage. He stood strong, denying 17 of 19 shots the Lightning to to him and his home net. It isn't alot, but several of thesee shots would've been highlight scores had Jet not been on point all night.
The Three Stars of the Game would be the Columbus Blue Jackets three scorers. The Third Star would go to Damon Severson who score the second goal tonight. The Second Star of the Game would go to Kent Johnson who made his twenty-third birthday memberable with the first goal of the night. The First Star of the Game went to the fastest man to get to five goals in Blue Jackets' history, Kirill Marchenko, who's goal also goes down as the game-winner in Period 3!
We're now 2-3-0 and will travel to Dallas to take on a talanted Stars team Tuesday night. This game will start a little later with a puck drop set for 8: 00 p.m.
GO CBJ!
