Toronto Maple Leafs @ Columbus Blue Jackets: Season 25 Game 10
Following an incredible overtime road win last night (4-3 over the Buffalo Sabers), the Blue Jackets had to rush back to Columbus for a meeting tonight with the Toronto Maple Leafs. After some Halloween fun at Nationwide Arena, the puck would drop on an eventful Period 1 for the home team. With his first goal of the season at 6:76, Cole Sillinger would get the Hockey Halloween party on the ice started! Charlie Coyle would add assist number four to his season, while Mathieu Olivier would add his second this season on the secondary. At 11:16, the Blue Jackets would double up on the Leafs with Zach Werenski's third goal of his season! Charlie Coyle and Mathieu Olivier would both add their second assists of the night on #8's goal, Charlie Coyle the Primary and Mathieu Olivier the secondary, again. The Leafs would have 9 shots on goal, 3 more than the Blue Jackets, but they'd never find the back of the net behind Elvis Merzlikins. The Blue Jackets would carry a two-goal lead into the center period.
Now, early into Period 2, the Leafs would find their first goal of the season, thanks to Sammy Blais scoring his first goal of the season. This goal would give Jake McCabe his third assist of his season, while teammate Steven Lorentz would add his fourth on the secondary. At 8:33, Ivan Provorov would give the Blue Jackets back their two-goal lead with goal number two of his season! Dimitri Voronkov and Kirill Marchenko would both add assist number five to their season on Ivan Provorov's goal. Cole Sillinger would then double up his night and season with his second goal at 13:24, taking the Blue Jackets to a 4-1 lead! Charlie Coyle would add his third assist tonight, sixth this season, while Zach Werenski would add his second point tonight with the secondary assist, his fifth this season. Dante Fabbro would bump the score to 5-1 for the home team at 16:56! Mathieu Olivier would add his third assist tonight, his fourth this season on the primary, while Cole Sillinger would take himself to a three-point night with the secondary assist! Bonsu, Elvis Merzlikins was on point in net this whole game, but especially this period. By the end of this period, the Blue Jackets would score four goals on just 7 shots. There was still a period to play at this point, but what an impressive showing for a team that played a full game plus overtime just last night!
Now, I prepared you, 5th Line, for the Leafs to challenge the Blue Jackets in Period 3. That said...the Blue Jackets' domination would continue! At 7:50, Mathieu Olivie would go from a 0-3-3 night to a 1-3-4 night with his first goal of the season! The only assist on this goal would be the fourth tonight, seventh this season, for Charlie Coyle! As the period grew short on time, the Leafs knew that they wouldn't win this game. That said, they knew they could give one of their dedicated players a career milestone, and at 15:45, John Tavaras would add his sixth goal this season, his 500th of his NHL Career. Mathew Knies would enter double digits with his tenth assist this season on the primary, while Nicholas Robertson would add his second this season on the secondary. Even though he isn't a Blue Jacket, congratulations to him; that is one hell of a milestone to reach in this league. Things would get a bit ridiculous as the Leafs would make it 6-3 at 18:10 with a goal from Nicholas Robertson, his second of the season. Former Blue Jacket Max Domi would get his first assist this season on the primary, while Sammy Blais would also add assist number one to his season with the secondary. This would be the final goal of the game, and the Blue Jackets would go on to beat the Leafs 6-3! No tricks and all treats tonight, especially for the three players of the game!
The Third Star of the Game would go to 1-3-4 Mathieu Olivier. He's never had a four-point night till this game. Congratulations to him!
The Second Star of the Game would go to 0-4-4 Charlie Coyle. Again, he's not had four assists in a game until this one. Congratulations to him!
The First Star of the Game would go to 2-0-2 Cole Sillinger. He was so close to a hat trick, but 5th Line, the season is young! Congratulations, Silly!
Elvis Merzlikins didn't get a star of the game, but I'd say he'd be the honorary fourth. He finished his night with a .919 save percentage as he stopped 34 of the Leafs' 37 shots on his home net. It may not be his highest numbers, but let me assure you, he made saves when they mattered most tonight.
After winning two back-to-back games, one on the road and one at home, I think our boys have earned a break. The Blue Jackets will start a new month at home when they host the St. Louis Blues on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. This will also be Star Wars night in Nationwide Arena. So, may the force be with our 6-4-0 Blue Jackets on November 1st!
GO CBJ!
