Columbus Blue Jackets @ Calgary Flames: Season 25 Game 13

I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but I find it heartwarming that game 13 of our season is against Johnny Gaudreau's original team and us. I'm sure this won't happen again for quite some time, but it feels right, you know? Johnny Forever.

The Columbus Blue Jackets would enter this game looking to start another win streak after their last was broken in a heartbreaker, 3-2 loss at the New York Islanders Sunday evening.  That said, the game did not start out in our visiting team's favor. Morgan Frost would score goal three of his season, putting the Flames on the board first, at 00:56. The primary assist would become number four of the season for Jonathan Huberdeau, while the secondary assist would become number three this season for Matt Coronato. Seconds later, at 1:32, Blake Coleman would add goal six to his season, bringing the Flames to an early 2-0 lead. Joel Hanley would gain assist number three of his season on the primary, while Samuel Honzek would add his second on the secondary. At 5:04, the Blue Jackets would lose Adam Fantilli to the box after hooking Morgan Frost. While his teammate was serving his penalty, Kirill Marchenko would fly up the ice with a fantastic pass from Captain Boone Jenner, scoring his sixth goal this season and the first shorthanded goal of his NHL Career! This goal at 6:57 would yield Boone Jenner's sixth assist this season, and bring the Blue Jackets within a goal. However, no further scoring opportunities would result in a goal for either team, leaving us with a 2-1 Flames lead after the opening period. The Flames would have 3 more shots on goal than the Blue Jackets in this period, 13-10.

Period 2 would end with the Blue Jackets having four more shots on goal than the Flames, 11-7, but the same period would end with the Flames shifting their lead from 2-1 to 4-1. Goal three for the Flames would come at 7:47 from Nazem Kadri, who, on the night of his 1,000th NHL Game, would score his fourth goal this season. Joel Farabee would tack on assist number five of his season with the primary, while Rasmus Anderson would add on his third with the secondary. Their fourth goal of the game, and the last of the middle period, would come from Adam Klapka as he'd score his second of the season at 8:24. The only assist on this goal would go to Yan Kuznetsov, and it would be his first of the season.

Period 3 wouldn't see the tides change for the Blue Jackets. They'd finally have a chance on the power play, but nothing would come of it. They'd control the shots on goal, 14-4, but none would make it past a focused Dustin Wolf. Tonight proved why the Flames offered him that huge 7.5 million X 7-year contract in early September. Jet Greaves would protect the visitors' net, allowing no goals in Period 3, but the team as a whole would have no answer for the quick Flames lead and the breakaway goals in Period 2. Further, with his third goal this season, Mikael Bachlund would come away with a fifth, empty net goal. The Blue Jackets would ultimately lose to the Flames, 5-1. The final shots on goal were 43 for the Blue Jackets and 26 for the Flames.

Given the final score, I'm sure it's no surprise that the three stars of the game all belonged to the Flames. The Third Star, with a 0-1-1 night, was Samuel Honzek. The Second Star of the game would be their goalie, Dustin Would, who had a .977 save percentage after saving 42 of our Blue Jackets' 43 shots on his home goal. The First Star, after a 1-0-1 night in his 1,000th NHL Game, was Nazem Kadri.

Our next game will be in Vancouver against the Canucks on Saturday night. Given that there's just over three minutes left in their current game against the Chicago Blackhawks, and they're being shut out 4-0, they'll be just as motivated for a win as us. Take note that our next matchup will have a late puck drop, 10:00 p.m. EST.

Go CBJ!
