Columbus Blue Jackets @ Washington Capitals: Season 25 Game 22

So...this game started out as a battle between the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets and the home Washington Capitals, but it did not stay that way. Period 1 would have a single goal, and it'd belong to the Capitals' Jakob Chychrun. This would become goal number seven of his season at 6:05. The primary assist would go to Ryan Leonard, his sixth this season, and the secondary assist would go to Hendrix Laplerre, his fifth this season. The Blue Jackets would have life in this period, but the Capitals' goalie, Logan Thompson, would dismiss every puck that came near him.

Period 2 would look promising for the Blue Jackets until the last few minutes. Tom Willson would take his Capitals up 2-0 with goal twelve of his season at 16:29. Aliaksei Protas adds assist number eight to his season with the primary, while Justin Sourdif would add his second on the secondary. This would be the start of the floodgates opening as Jakob Chychrun would add goal two to his night, eighth to his season, at 19:45 as Brendon Gaunce was in the box for hooking him. Tom Willson would gain the only assist on this goal, his eleventh this season. The Capitals' 3-0 lead would then jump to 4-0 in the final seconds of Period 2 as John Carlson would score goal five of his season at 19:57. Alex Ovechkin, who came away with the primary and his eleventh assist this season, was fed the puck by Justin Sourdif from a faceoff in the Blue Jackets zone, resulting in his second assist tonight and third this season on the secondary. So, in typical Capitals' fashion, it would take them less than four minutes to bump themselves up 4-0.

At 4:05, the Capitals would make it 5-0 with a goal from Martin Fehervary would add goal number two to his season. Connor McMichael would add his ninth assist to his season on the primary, while teammate John Carison would add his sixteenth on the secondary. Denton Mateychuk would seal the shutout from Logan Thompson after sending the puck to the back of his home net for goal number five of his season! Brendan Gaunce and Jake Christiansen would each pick up their first assists this season on the last goal of the game. The Blue Jackets wouldn't be able to climb the mountain built by the Capitals in Period 2, losing 5-1.

This day cost us far more than 2 points. I hope that Kirill Marchenko is alright and will be back sooner than later, as he was injured earlier in practice. To make matters worse, we lost two of our strongest players during this game. Mathieu Olivier and Zach Werenski, two names you never want to hear leave a game, both did. So, as I cringe, I wish them both the best and hope whatever kept them from finishing this game is minor.

Tom Wilson would get the Third Star of the Game after a goal and an assist. John Carlson would get the Second Star of the Game with a goal and an assist tonight. Jakob Chychrun would get the First star of the Game after he had two goals on home ice tonight.

With any luck, coming home will do our boys some good. Their next game will be at home on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. as we welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to home ice. I also hope that the three men we lost today/tonight won't be out long because we need all of them sooner than later for sure.

Go CBJ!
