Columbus Blue Jackets @ Winnipeg Jets: Season 25 Game 20
After a home game last night, with bonus hockey leading to a shootout win over the Montreal Canadians 4-3, the Columbus Blue Jackets hopped on a plane to Canada. They played their next game tonight, less than 24 hours later, at the Jets. The home team would be the first to score in a competitive opening period. Their goal would come from Adam Lowry at 7:35, and this would be his first goal of the season. Nino Niederreiter would add assist number eight of his season on the primary, while Neal Pionk would add his fourth on the secondary. The Jets would lead 1-0, but at the end of Period 1, Miles Wood would speed down the ice and score his fifth goal of the season! Damon Severson would add his fifth assist on the primary, and a rare goalie assist would happen with Elvis Merzlikins getting the secondary assist, his first of the season. The Blue Jackets and Jets would run down the rest of the clock, keeping it a 1-1 tie ahead of Period 2. The shots on goal for this period were even at 11 for the Blue Jackets and 11 for the Jets.
Period 2 would be a bit of a slower start for the visiting Blue Jackets, while the Jets came out ready to score, and boy did they. With just 1:12 played in the period, Jets' Josh Morrissey would add goal number four to his season. Mark Scheifele would add assist number fourteen to his season, and teammate Kyle Conner would add his thirteenth on the secondary. Towards the end of the period, Luca Del Bel Belluz would be called for holding Josh Morrissey, sending him to the box for two minutes. During this power play, the Jets would get their third goal of the game, their first on the power play. Neal Pionk would get goal number one of his season, going 1-1-2 so far tonight. Former Blue Jacket Gus Nyquist would get his sixth assist this season on the primary, while Nino Niederreiter would add his ninth on the secondary. The Blue Jackets would stay out of the box and keep the Jets out of the net for the rest of the period, but would find themselves down 3-1 with just twenty minutes of regulation remaining after the dust settled.
The Jets would come out ready for Period 3 just as they did in Period 2, scoring just 2:45 into the final regulation period. The Jets' fourth goal tonight would become number eleven for Kyle Connor this season. Mark Scheifele would add another assist to his total tonight, his fifteenth overall this season, on the primary, while Josh Morrissey would do the same, adding his seventeenth this season on the secondary. Zach Werenski would prove that the Blue Jackets were down, but not out, with his eighth goal this season at 4:04! Also, congratulations to our #8 as he reaches the 400 point mark, something that only two other Blue Jackets players have done, and something no Blue Jackets' Defenseman has ever done! Cole Sillinger would add his sixth assist of the season on the primary, while Charlie Coyle would add his eleventh on the secondary. But, the Jets would take their lead from4-2 to 5-2 at 6:23 after Logan Stanley scored goal number three of his season. Mark Scheifele would add his third assist tonight, his sixteenth this season, on the primary, while Luke Schenn would add his second assist on the secondary. Even with some good chances at the end, the Blue Jackets wouldn't be able to close the margin and would lose the second of their back-to-back, 5-3.
The hardest part of this loss isn't the two points, it's that Kirill Marchenko's point streak ends tonight at twelve gams. It is still the second longest in our franchise's history, but he was so close to matching the first. That said, we all know Kirill will be back in this position with an opportunity to chase Ryan Johansen and his thirteen-game point streak soon!
Josh Morrissey would finish with a 1-1-2 and get the Third Star of the Game. Adam Lowry would finish with a 1-0-1 and get the Second Star of the Game. And, with his 0-3-3 night, Mark Scheifele would take the First Star of the Game. The Blue Jackets would finish with 8 fewer shots on goal compared to the Jets, 22-30.
It wasn't the best night for Elvis Merzlikins in the visitor's net, but he also hasn't played in the last five games. He would finish with a .833 save percentage after making 25 saves on the Jets' 30 shots on his net. That said, his goalie assist on the first goal was cool.
Our net chance to add points to the season total will be in Toronto on Thursday night. We'll play the Maple Leafs at 7:00 p.m.
Go CBJ!
