Edmonton Oilers @ Columbus Blue Jackets: Season 25 Game 17
Hello, 5th Line. Thank you to everyone who wished me well last week. I had Covid, but am doing much better now. I've never been more ready to recap a hockey game with ya'll, so let's go!
First off, happy Hockey Fight Cancer 2025! To all those out there fighting, the survivors, and their families, we love you! Goal number one of the night would become number two this season for Mathieu Olivier! His goal would come at 15:38, and give Charlie Coyle on the Primary and Zach Werenski on the secondary their eighth assists of the season. The Blue Jackets wouldn't know it at the time, but they'd take a 1-0 lead into a very eventful Period 2.
00:44 into the middle period, Charlie Coyle would put away goal number three of his season, taking the Blue Jackets to a 2-0 lead. The only assist on this goal would go to Mathieu Olivier, his fifth so far this season. Special note, both men would now have a multipoint night (1-1-2) with roughly 2/3 of a game to play! Of course, the Oilers, who played the last two years for the Stanley Cup, never go down without a fight. Matt Savoie would get the Oilers on the scoreboard at 8:08 with goal number two of his season. The primary assist would give Evan Bouchard his tenth, while Conner McDavid adds assist number nineteen on the secondary. The Oilers would then double up at 9:49 with a goal from Leon Draisaitl. This marks his eleventh goal of the season. The only assist on this goal would give Evan Bouchard his eleventh this season, and his second tonight. With two quick goals from the Oilers, the game would be tied at 2-2, but the Blue Jackets wouldn't let that score stand for long. Denton Mateychuk would slide home goal number four of his season at 10:18, taking back the lead for the home team! Sean Monahan would pick up his seventh assist this season on the primary, while Luca Del Bel Belluz would get his first assist this season. Not long after this, Conner McDavid would find the back of the net, but the Blue Jackets would win their coaches' challenge, and it would come off the scoreboard for offsides! Then, at 18:20, Adam Fantilli would extend the Blue Jackets' lead to two goals with his fifth this season! Kirill Marchenko extends his nine-game point streak to ten with the primary assist, his eleventh this season, while Damon Severson picks up his fourth assist of his season on the secondary. The Oilers would make a wild push at the end, pulling their goaltender, Calvin Pickard, for an extra man on the ice. They'd take the faceoff and make a shot toward Jet Greaves and the Blue Jackets' net, but it wouldn't come close, and the Blue Jackets would carry a two-goal advantage into the final regulation period!
Mathieu Olivier would make the cannon bang a second time tonight at 7:30 with goal number three of his season. To this point, he has a 2-1-3 night. Charlie Coyle would add to his multipoint night (1-2-3) with the primary assist, his ninth this season, while Coole Sillinger would add the secondary assist to his total, giving him five so far this season. Seconds later, V Podkolzin would get lucky as he'd pick up a bad turnover at Dimitri Voronkov's expense, scoring goal three of his season at 7:57. There would be only one assist on this Oilers' goal, number seven this season for former Blue Jackets, Jack Roslovic. Leon Draisaitl would then cut the Blue Jackets' lead to a one-goal advantage at 11:27 after scoring goal twelve of his season. Evan Buchard keeps his night of assists rolling with his third of the evening, twelfth this season, on the primary. The secondary assist would become the twentieth of the season for Connor McDavid, two of which came tonight alone. The Blue Jackets would go on to survive two minutes of four-on-four, the Oilers pulling Calvin Pickard again, and a mighty push by the opposition, but in the end, the home team would be victorious! It's a 5-4 regulation win for the Blue Jackets on Hockey Fight Cancer Night! Redemption is served best on home ice!
The Third Star of the Game would go to Leon Draisaitl. I don't disagree with this; he had a 2-0-2 night and worked damn hard for it.
The Second Star of the Game would go to our own Charlie Coyle after his 1-2-3 night. He's had a couple of high-point games this season, and I love watching him play for us!
The First Star of the Game would go to Mathieu Olivier, who constantly likes to remind us all why he got a lengthy contract extension! He had a 2-1-3 night. Not only do I love seeing this out of him for a second season in a row, but I love that we have him locked in as he continues to shine here in Columbus!
Our next game will be Saturday night at home. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. against the New York Rangers. The Rangers have been much like the Blue Jackets this season; they've won big and lost big. So, even though this matchup is always fun to begin with, it should be a close matchup, too! For those watching another Ohio team that evening, I'll have a recap for you here following the game!
GO CBJ!
