Montreal Canadians @ Columbus Blue Jackets: Season 25 Game 19
6:58 after the bang of the cannon to symbolize the start of the game tonight in Nationwide Arena, it would go off again for Zach Werenski's fifth goal this season! Mathieu Oliver and Charlie Coyle would continue making their point as to why they get so much ice time, with Olivier getting assist number six of his season on the primary and Coyle getting his tenth this season on the secondary. This would be the only goal of the period, giving the Blue Jackets a one-goal lead ahead of period 2. The Blue Jackets would also have two more shots on net compared to the Canadians, 10-8.
At 4:47, the Canadians would match the Blue Jackets' goal after Oliver Kapanen scored number seven of his season. Mike Matheson would add his seventh assist this season on the primary, while teammate Ivan Demidov would add his tenth. After this tying goal for the Canadians, though, the Blue Jackets would have a huge answer. First, Adam Fanttilli would find goal six at the back of the Canadians' net at 9:47! With assist number thirteen this season on the primary, Kirill Marchenko would etch his name as the second-longest point streak in Blue Jackets history, with twelve games and counting! I addition, Dimitri Voronkov would add assist number eight to his season with the secondary. A few minutes later, Canadians' Nick Suzuki would slash Cole Sillinger, giving the Blue Jackets a two-minute power play. At 13:32, Dimitri Voronkov would ensure that power play success with his eighth goal of the season! Kirill Marchenko would add yet another point to his night with assist number fourteen of his season on the primary, while Zach Werenski achieves his own multipoint night with a 1-1-2 after picking up his tenth assist this season on the secondary. The Blue Jackets would maintain their 3-1 lead through the end of the period to take a two-goal advantage into the final regulation period. It's also worth noting that the Canadians would come away from this period with 9 shots on net compared to the Blue Jackets' 6, but as I've said before, quality of quantity.
The Canadians would come out pushing in Period 3, and they'd get their second goal of the game at 8:28 after Josh Anderson scored goal three of his season. Lane Hutson would add his fourteenth assist to his season total on the primary, while Jake Evans would add his third of the season on the secondary. So, the Blue Jackets would have a one-goal lead, and I hate to say it, 5th Line, but history would repeat itself. At 18:41, Lane Hutson would get goal two of his season and bring us to a 3-3 tie. N Dobson would add assist number eleven to his season, while Cole Caufield would add his seventh. Thankfully, the Blue Jackets would manage to keep the Canadians from scoring again in regulation, allowing each team to pick up a point and sending us to overtime for a duel over point two of the night.
Jet Greaves is the main reason that the Blue Jackets survived the 3-on-3 overtime to go to a shootout. The Canadians would finish this overtime with 3 shots on goal; the Blue Jackets would finish with none. Where this part of overtime was rough, the shootout was much better for the Blue Jackets as Kent Johnson would shoot first and score! In Round 2 of the shootout, Cole Caufield would answer for the Canadians, but then Kirill Marchenko would score in Round 3, and Jet Greaves would beat the Canadians' third shooter. The Blue Jackets WIN in a shootout 4-3! Whew!
The Blue Jackets take all three starts of the game. The Third Star of the Game went to Dimitri Voronkov with his 1-1-2 night. The Second Star of the game went to Zach Werenski after his 1-1-2 night. And the First Star of the Game was Kirill Marchenko, who had a 0-2-2 night, and also had the shootout winner!
Jet Greaves finished his night with a .906 save percentage after he shut down 29 of the Canadians' 32 shots on his home net.
The Blue Jackets will now hop on a plane and fly to Winnipeg. Their next game will be at the Jets tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. Back-to-backs are trying, but having a win on the first game will certainly help energy tomorrow night. They'll need it as the Jets are still the solid team they emerged as last year.
GO CBJ!
