Columbus Blue Jackets @ Ottawa Senators: 12/29/25

Recently, the Columbus Blue Jackets have been showing off their talents on the ice. Tonight would be no different as they'd look to make their winning ways into a winning streak. They'd have a strong first period, winning the shots on goal battle 12-7, and also scoring the only goal of the period at 15:58! That goal would become Captain Boone Jenner's sixth this season, while giving Cole Sillinger his thirteenth assist this season on the primary, and Charlie Coyle his eighteenth assist this season on the secondary. Bonus: Mathieu Oliver would win a fight in his first period back from injury reserve against Senators' Kurtis MacDermid. Both men got five minutes each for fighting, although I don't think Kurtis MacDermid got a hit in before a fresh Mathieu Oliver took him to the ice!

The Blue Jackets wouldn't let up in Period 2, expanding their lead to 2-0 at 1:21 after Damon Severson launched the puck toward the Senators' net and scored goal number three of his season! The primary assist went to Dimitri Voronkov, giving him his twelfth this season, while Cole Sillinger would pick up his second assist tonight, his fourteenth assist overall this season, on the secondary. Before the period could end, the Senators would get a goal back after Jake Sanderson got the puck past Blue Jackets goalie Jet Greaves at 8:16 for goal number eight of his season. Tim Stutzlee adds assist number twenty-two to his season with the primary, while the secondary becomes the twelfth assist this season for Brady Tkachuk. The Senators would win the shots on goal battle this period, 10-3, but the Blue Jackets would hold the lead that matters most, 2-1 on the scoreboard.

Early into Period 3, the Blue Jackets would prove they were ready to win this game in regulation. At 1:57, the Blue Jackets would get goal three tonight from Denton Mateychuk, his seventh this season! Damon Severson adds an assist to his earlier goal, gaining his twelfth assist this season on the primary, while Chaerlie Coyle adds a second assist tonight, his nineteenth this season, on the secondary. Then, at 15:54, Kirill Marchenko would add the cherry on top with goal number fourteen of his season! Mason Marchment gets his second assist as a Blue Jacket, his eleventh this season, on the primary, while Adam Fantilli gets his thirteenth assist this season on the secondary! The Senators win the shots on goal battle this period, 11-7, but the Blue Jackets WIN their third game in a row, 4-1!

Jake Sanderson gets the Third Star of the Game after being the only Senators' player to get the puck past Blue Jackets goaltender Jet Greaves.

With a goal and an assist tonight, Damon Seaverson adds the Second Star of the Game to his night, too.

With an outstanding night in the visitor's net, Jet Greaves gets the First Star of the Game tonight! He accomplished a .964 save percentage after denying the Senators on all but one shot, going 27/28 in this game!

This is a huge win. Not only does the team get another 2 points, but they keep 2 points from a division team as well. Further, this team is proving that they can win even when key players, like Zach Werenski and Sean Monahan, are out of the lineup. Also, this was a back-to-back with travel headaches because the Ohio weather was doing Ohio things. If you know, you know.

The Blue Jackets will head back home for their next game on Wednesday Night. The New Jersey Devils will play their own back-to-back, starting Tuesday night in Toronto against the Maple Leafs, before traveling to Columbus to face our hot Blue Jackets at 7:00 p.m. in Nationwide Arena. It'll be a fun way to send off 2025!

A final note: I wish the best of luck to Yegor Chinnakhov, who was traded late this afternoon to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Danton Helmer and two draft picks. He was my mom's favorite player, and although I understand the legistics here, I know he was a favorite to many 5th Line fans. I'll miss hearing Bob McElligott yell, 'Bartender, pour me a Yeger-Bomb,' whenever he scored for sure!

GO CBJ!!!
