Columbus Blue Jackets @ St. Louis Blues: Season 25 1/31/26
Tonight's game was full of goals, so we're going to skip my (at times corny) intro and jump right into the recap! The visiting Blue Jackets would kill off an early Blues' power play after Cole Sillinger went to the box at 2:41 for holding Oskar Sundqvist. However, a few minutes later, at even strength, the Blues would still be the first team to score. At 7:11, Jimmy Snuggerud would add goal nine to his season, giving Brayden Schenn his eleventh assist on the primary and Dalibor Dvorsky his sixth assist on the secondary. The good news is that while the Blues arena was still announcing the Blues' goal, the Blue Jackets tied the game at 1-1! Isac Lundestrom would score his second this season at 7:48. Captain Boone Jenner adds his eighteenth assist on the primary, and Miles Wood would find his way back to the scoresheet with his fifth assist this season on the secondary. This would be followed up a few minutes later, at 12:54, with Denton Mateychuk shooting his shot and getting goal number nine of his season! Kent Johnson adds his twelfth assist this season with the primary, while Sean Monahan gets the secondary assist, his seventeenth this season. When the opening period closed, the Blue Jackets would lead 2-1 on the scoreboard and have the most shots on goal for the period, 10-7.
Just like Period 1, the Blue Jackets would find themselves back on the penalty kill with Dmitri Voronkov in the box for slashing Blues' Dalibor Dvorsky. Unlike Period 1, the Blues wouldn't allow the Blue Jackets to escape this power play without scoring. Goal number seven of the season for Jonatan Berggren would come at 3:15, bringing the game to its second tie of 2-2. Pius Suter gets his eighth goal this season with the primary, while Brayden Schenn adds his twelfth assist this season on the secondary. The table would reverse at 8:96 as Jordan Kyrou would sit in the box for holding Kirill Marchenko, and Kent Johnson's sixth goal this season at 8:30 would give the Blue Jackets their second lead of the night. Defenseman Ivan Provorov gets to add his fourteenth assist on this goal with the primary, while Dmitri Voronkov gets his fifteenth assist this season on the secondary. But at 13:35, the Blues would tie the game for the second time tonight. See, I told you this game had a lot of goals! This one would belong to Tyler Tucker, marking his third this season. Jonatan Berggen would add the primary assist to his prior goal, his seventh this season, and Jimmy Snuggerud would add a secondary assist to his prior goal, his twelfth this season. Before the period could conclude, one more goal would be scored, and it would give our visiting Blue Jackets their third lead of the game at 16:01. Damon Severson scored his fourth goal this season, and the only assist on it is the forty-first this season for Zach Werenski! So, after an eventful second twenty minutes, the Blue Jackets would still lead by a goal, but this time 4-3. The shots on goal this period would be even at 9-9.
Something to watch beyond tonight: Sean Monahan wouldn't play in Period 3 tonight against the Blues. I didn't hear anything concerning the occurrence, but he's a notable loss for this team. He had an assist tonight, but the game-winning goal in our last game against the Blackhawks. Further, he's an experienced leader in our locker room. So hopefully, he's alright.
5th Line, I'm not going to lie, after four lead changes and seven goals over the first forty minutes, I'm thrilled to say that there wouldn't be another goal until Mason Marchment's thirteenth this season at 19:30. The empty net goal would have two assists, the twenty-seventh this season for Kirill Marchenko on the primary, and the twenty-second this season for Adam Fantilli on the secondary. Back-to-back games, on the road, are not easy, but the Blue Jackets get all four points avalible in the forty-eight hours! The grind to the finish shots in the shots on goal for this final period, where the Blues had 15 to our 4. Whew, that was a nailbiter!
The fourth goal of Damon Severson's season was the game-winner, and it also got him the Third Star of the Game tonight!
Blues' Jimmy Snuggerud finishes with a goal and an assist, earning the Second Star of the Game.
Kent Johnson, finishing with a goal and two assists, adds the First Star of the Game to a successful, winning night!
Of course, Jet Greaves also contributed a lot to this game. He stopped 28 of the 31 shots the Blues sent his way, giving himself a .903 save percentage to finish the night. It's not the most shots he's faced in a game this season, but some of those were quality shots that could've easily turned this win into a loss. Good game, Jet!
The Blue Jackets will get an earned day off tomorrow, the travel to face the Devils in New Jersey on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Isac Lundestrom did take a hard hit in Period 3, but finished out the game, so we'll have to watch him and Sean Monahan ahead of this last road game before the 2026 Winter Olympic break. Fingers crossed, both are fine and able to play in a couple of days.
For those keeping track, and who isn't, Rick Bowness is now 8-1-0 as Head Coach. We're also riding a five-game win streak! Woo!
GO CBJ!!!!!
