5th Line, We Have a Trade! 3/6/26

Did you go to bed yet, 5th Line? Finally, being a night owl pays off on NHL Trade Deadline Day! As of 12:20 a.m., we have a new Blue Jacket! The Vancouver Canucks have accepted two draft picks from Columbus, a third-round pick this year (2026) and a second-round pick (2028), for Conor Garland!

The 29-year-old, who turns 30 next week, has appeared in 50 games for the Canucks. In that time, he's scored seven goals and nineteen assists for twenty-six points. Not bad at all. From 2018-2021, Conor Garland was with the team that drafted him in round 2 in 2015, the Arizona Coyotes. From 2021 to now, he's been in Vancouver with the Canucks. In that time, he's appeared in 535 NHL games, scoring 129 goals and 188 assists for 317 points.

It's no secret that the Vancouver Canucks would be looking to sell during this year's trade deadline. They haven't had the best season. I know I said in a post, literally two hours ago, that I didn't think we needed to add. That said, we do not know how long Mason Marchment will be out after his injury at home against the Florida Panthers last night. So, I do like Don Waddell giving us an insurance policy in a way that keeps our locker room intact. And, with any luck, Mason will be fine, and this gives us a long-term insurance policy instead of one we have to cash in right away. It's vital to have those aces in your pocket during a push for the playoffs and, with any luck, a playoff run.

I'm curious as to where he'll slot in. If he will play on Saturday when we welcome the Utah Mammoth to town. What number will he wear? Look, I know the lore of exchanging Rolex Watches, but Zach isn't giving up his #8 for a watch, okay! Also, I love a unique name, but with how much scoring can happen in a game, it's so nice that I already know how to spell his name from watching him play on nights the Blue Jackets are not. Honestly, the only thing I hate about this is that I have to wait till Saturday to watch him play and get answers to my thoughts in this paragraph. Also, Conor, a bit of advice: Bring all your weather gear with you from Vancouver. I love Ohio, and hope you do, too, but the weather here is weird!

Welcome to Columbus, Conor Garland!
