Columbus Blue Jackets @ Carolina Hurricanes: Season 25 4/2/26

"I don't want to write this recap tonight," is what I said to my mom as we finished up dinner, and I saw on my phone that it was now 5-1, Hurricanes.

Both of these teams had something to gain if they won tonight. For the Blue Jackets, it was keeping their Wildcard 2 playoff spot. For the Hurricanes, it was clinching a playoff spot. The Hurricanes are at the top of the top of the Metropolitan division with 100 points, and tonight's game proved why they hold the position.

The Hurricanes would take a 3-0 lead in Period 1. Logan Stankoven would pick up his first goal tonight, his sixteenth this season, at 2:27. K'Andre Miller would add his twenty-seventh assist this season on the primary, while Taylor Hall would add his twenty-sixth assist this season on the secondary. Logan Stankoven would quickly follow this goal up with his second tonight, giving him his seventeenth goal this season, at 8:52. Taylor Hall would add a second assist tonight, his twenty-seventh this season, on the primary assist, and Jackson Blake would add his twenty-fifth assist this season on the secondary. Then, at 11:31, K'Andre Miller would go to the box for a holding penalty against Blue Jackets' Danton Heinen. The Blue Jackets would get a chance on the power play, but it was short-lived as Alexander Nikishin would add his eleventh goal this season, short-handed. S Jarvis added assist number thirty-three to his season with the primary, while Sebastian Aho added his fifty-first assist this season on the secondary. The goals would stop here, but the disjointed and confusing play of this team as of late wouldn't just haunt them in this period, but for the rest of this game. The shots on goal this period would dominate, 9-2, in favor of the Hurricanes.

I saw some fans asking on social media why Elvis Merzlikins wasn't pulled from the goal and replaced with Jet Greaves. It's simple: The whole team was failing. This 3-0 lead wasn't because he missed shots or lacked focus tonight. I don't know what is going on behind the scenes that we don't know, and I do not like to speculate, but something's happening. It might very well be the injuries in the last week, but something is definitely different, and it's hard to watch.

There would be a spark in Period 2, Denton Meteychuk would score, bringing us to a 3-1 Hurricanes lead. This would be goal thirteen of his season, and it would come at 11:24. Captain Boone Jenner would have the primary assist, his twenty-fourth of the season, while Isac Lundestrom added his eighth assist this season on the secondary. Unfortunately, the confidence gained for our Blue Jackets from this goal was destroyed as the Hurricanes would score their fourth goal tonight at 11:37. Jordan Martinook scored this goal, marking his twelfth this season. Jordan Staal would add his fourteenth assist this season as the only player with an assist on this goal. The shots on goal this period were much closer, 6-4, but the Hurricanes maintained their dominance.

6:44 into Period 3 was when I accepted I had to write this blog post, as I'm dedicated to my readers, even though I wanted to pretend this game never happened. The Hurricanes added goal five to their night via Andrei Svechnikov. This was his twenty-eighth goal this season, and it was scored while Ivan Provorov sat in the box for slashing Jordan Staal, making this final Hurricanes' goal a power-play goal. Shayne Gostisbeher would add his thirty-fourth assist this season on the primary, and Sebastian Ahowould add his second assist tonight, fifty-second this season, on the secondary. The final regulation period would conclude with the Hurricanes leading shots on goal, 7-4. The Blue Jackets had a total of 10 shots on goal all night.

I am stunned. I'm at a loss for words. We have lost our Wildcard 2 spot after this loss, while the Hurricanes officially punched their ticket to the postseason. We play the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday night at home. I don't know what needs to be said or done in that locker room, but it needs to be done. NOW. I try to be optimistic here, but this team has come too damn far to do this. Band together and figure it out. Our boys have done it before; it is time to do it again.

All three stars tonight were Hurricanes players. Tayeor Hall was the Third Star of the Game with his two assists tonight. Sabastian Aho was the Second Star of the Game with two assists tonight. Logan Stankoven would be the First Star of the Game with two goals tonight.

When Rick Bowness was hired, this team rode a high of winning. Now, they have been brought down to earth again, hard. In the postgame, Rick Bowness made it clear he saw who put the maximum effort into this game tonight and who did not. If it hurts for us to watch, I'm sure it's ten times worse for the men on the ice. This last week, a five-game losing streak, was the wakeup call. The only question is, will the Blue Jackets get up, or hit snooze till next season? Only time will tell.
