Columbus Blue Jackets @ Carolina Hurricanes: Season 6 Game 11 Recap
In our Columbus Blue Jackets' last game against the Philadelphia Flyers, they built a 3-goal lead in period 1, but it evaporated with 5 minutes left in period 3. Kent Johnson scored his fifth goal of the season in overtime to secure the second point. Going into tonight's game in North Carolina, against the defending Stanley Cup Champions, was a tall order, and this is how the game unfolded.
Period 1 had a goal from Hurricanes Jordan Martinook. He scored it at 15:51, and this became his second goal of the season. Seth Jarvis would add his third assist of the season on the primary, while Jaccob Slavin would add his fourth assist this season on the secondary. Our Blue Jackets were still very much alive at this point, only down a goal when the opening period concluded. The shots on goal this period were 16-8, in favor of the home team.
Period 2 would also have a single goal, again scored by the Hurricanes. Logan Stankoven would add his ninth of the season at 7:47. Nikolaj Ehlers would add his eighth assist to his season on the primary, while Jackson Blake added his twelfth assist to his season on the secondary. The Blue Jackets led shots on goal, 7-5 this period. Now, I know at this point we're down 2-0 on the road, but just wait, period 3 is when it gets good!
So, before it can get good for our visiting team, the Hurricanes would go up 3-0. Mark Jankowski would score his seventh goal of the season at 00:16. Seth Jarvis would get his second assist tonight, on the primary, giving him his fourth of the season. Jalen Chatfield would pick up his third assist this season on the secondary. It would take a few more minutes, but at 6:56, Denton Mateychuk would get our Blue Jackets on the board with his fourth goal this season! Jak Christianson would add his second assist this season on the primary, while Season Monahan would pick up his third assist this season on the secondary. Then, with Sean Walker in the box for tripping Charlie Coyle, Kent Johnson would score goal seven of his season on the power play! Charlie Coyle gets his eighth assist this season on the primary, while Zach Werenski gets his ninth assist this season on the secondary. Knowing that one more goal would tie this game, the Blue Jackets would push the Hurricanes to their limit, and it was amazing to see. Unfortunately, they would run out of time to score the equalizer, but they still led shots on goal in the final regulation period, 11-6. It proves this team was the hungriest and most in sync they have been in a third period in quite some time. I want to see them pack this energy in a carry-on and take it to Dallas, because they'll play with the same playoff-level intensity Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
The Three Stars of the Game were all Hurricanes' players. Mark Jankowski was the Third Star with his 1-0-1 night. Seth Jarvis was the Second Star with his 0-2-2 night. Pyotr Kochetkov, their goalie, was the First Star after he stopped 24 of our 26 total shots on his net, equaling a strong .923 save percentage.
