Columbus Blue Jackets @ St. Louis Blues: Season 26 Game 4 Recap

After an exhilarating second win of the season in overtime against the Pittsburgh Penguins last night, 4-3, the Blue Jackets hit the road for the first time this season, going to St. Louis for a matchup with the Blues. The Blue Jackets would run the first period, scoring two goals. The first goal was scored at 16:10 by Valeri Nichushkin. This was his first goal of the season, and as a Blue Jacket! Sean Monahan and Erik Gudbranson would each pick up their first assists of the season on this goal. Not long after, at 19:48, Kent Johnson would add his first goal of the season to the scoresheet! Adam Fantilli would get his first assist of the season on the primary, while Zach Werenski would add his fourth assist of the season on the secondary. The final seconds would tick away, and the Blue Jackets would take a 2-0 lead into period 2. The Blue Jackets would also lead in shots on goal this period, 10-4.

Unfortunately, the lead was not to last. 00:25 into the period, Ross Johnston and Mathieu Oliver would fight. Each would take a 5-minute major for the fight, and the Blues would gain momentum from it, scoring three unanswered goals this period and leading shots on goal 12-3 when it was all said and done. The first goal would come at 6:10 from Jake Neighbours, and it would be his first goal of the season. Justin Barron and Dylan Holloway would gain their first assists of the season on this goal. The second Blues goal would come from Jimmy Snuggerud at 9:02. This would be his second goal of the season. Philip Broberg would get his third assist of the season on the primary, while Dylan Holloway would get his second assist of the game and season on the secondary. Jimmy Snuggerud would add a second goal to his night, the third of his season, at 12:32. Robert Thomas would add his first assist of the season on the primary, while Dylan Holloway would add his third assist of the night and season on the secondary. And, just like that, the Blues would take control on home ice, 3-2, ahead of period 3.

Cole Sillinger would tie the game, 3-3, at 6:51! This was his second goal of the season. Cole Sillinger would add his fourth assist of the season on the primary, while Carson Soucy would get his first assist of the season on the secondary. Unfortunately, the Blues would snatch back the lead, going up 4-3 after Jonatan Berggren added his first goal of the season at 9:33. Mason McTavish and Colton Parayko would both add their second assists of the season on this goal from Jonatan Berggren. At 19:17, Pavel Buchnevich would add an unassisted empty-net goal, his first of the season, bringing us to the 5-3 final; the St. Louis Blues win at home. Shots on goal this period were much closer, in favor of the Blues but only by one, 11-10.

For this being the first road game and back-to-back of the season, this wasn't a bad game. That said, although we went toe to toe with them, you kind of expect a win and 2 points when you lead 2-0 after period 1. Again, mistakes like 'too many men on the ice' in the middle of period 2 cost them the momentum. This team has some things to clean up before Tuesday when they take the ice again.

Ross Johnston had no points, but played a vital role in this game as his fight with Blue Jackets' Mathieu Oliver was definitely the spark the home team needed to win. Dylan Holloway gets the Second Star of the Game after his 0-3-3 assist night. Jimmy Snuggerud is the First Star of the game, finishing with a 2-0-2 night.

Tuesday night will be the first Frozen Frenzy of the season as all 32 teams will play in 16 games throughout the night. The Florida Panthers will come to town for a 6:15 puck drop. The Panthers did lose to the Minnesota Wild tonight, 4-1. They are down a few players, but don't be fooled; they are still a highly favored playoff team and will put up a fight for those two points in Nationwide Arena. It's sure to be a good game, and I'll have a recap of it for you right here afterward.

Go CBJ!
